Numbers 32

GW 1 The tribes of Reuben and Gad had a large number of livestock. They saw that the regions of Jazer and Gilead were a good place for livestock. NIV 1 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. GW 2 So they came to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the leaders of the community, and said to them, NIV 2 So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, GW 3 "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, NIV 3 "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon-- GW 4 the land that the LORD won for the community of Israel, is a good place for livestock. Gentlemen, we have livestock. NIV 4 the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel--are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock. GW 5 Please give us this land as our property. Don't make us cross the Jordan River." NIV 5 If we have found favor in your eyes," they said, "let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan." GW 6 Moses asked the tribes of Gad and Reuben, "Are you going to stay here while the rest of the Israelites go to war? NIV 6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Shall your countrymen go to war while you sit here? GW 7 That might discourage them from entering the land the LORD has given them. NIV 7 Why do you discourage the Israelites from going over into the land the LORD has given them? GW 8 That's what your ancestors did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to take a look at the land. NIV 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land. GW 9 They went as far as the Eshcol Valley and saw the land. But then they discouraged the rest of the Israelites from entering the land that the LORD had given them. NIV 9 After they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them. GW 10 That day the LORD became angry and swore this oath, NIV 10 The LORD's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath: GW 11 'None of the people 20 years old or older, who came from Egypt, will see the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath. This is because they didn't wholeheartedly follow me.' NIV 11 'Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old or more who came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-- GW 12 Only Caleb (son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite) and Joshua (son of Nun) will get to see the land. This is because they wholeheartedly followed the LORD. NIV 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.' GW 13 Since the LORD was angry with the Israelites, he made them wander in the desert for 40 years until the whole generation of those who had done evil in the LORD's presence was gone. NIV 13 The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone. GW 14 "You're just like your parents! You're a bunch of sinners trying to make the LORD angry with Israel again. NIV 14 "And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel. GW 15 If you turn away from him, he will abandon all these people in the desert. You would be responsible for their destruction." NIV 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the desert, and you will be the cause of their destruction." GW 16 Then the tribes of Gad and Reuben came up to Moses and said, "Allow us to build stone fences for our livestock and cities for our families here. NIV 16 Then they came up to him and said, "We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children. GW 17 Then we'll be ready [to march] in battle formation ahead of the other Israelites until we have brought them to their land. Meanwhile our families will live in walled cities, safe from the other people who live here. NIV 17 But we are ready to arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. GW 18 We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his own land. NIV 18 We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his inheritance. GW 19 We won't take possession of any land on the other side of the Jordan River, to the west and beyond. We already have our land here, east of the Jordan." NIV 19 We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan." GW 20 Moses answered, "Do what you have said. In the LORD's presence have all your armed men get ready for battle. NIV 20 Then Moses said to them, "If you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle, GW 21 Have them cross the Jordan, and fight until the LORD forces out his enemies NIV 21 and if all of you will go armed over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him-- GW 22 and the land is conquered. Then you may come back. You will have fulfilled your military duty to the LORD and Israel. This land will be your own property in the LORD's presence. NIV 22 then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD. GW 23 "If you don't do all these things, you will be sinning against the LORD. You can be sure that you will be punished for your sin. NIV 23 "But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. GW 24 Build cities for your families and stone fences for your flocks, but do what you have promised." NIV 24 Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised." GW 25 Then the tribes of Gad and Reuben said to Moses, "Sir, we will do as you command. NIV 25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, "We your servants will do as our lord commands. GW 26 Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our other animals will stay here in the cities of Gilead. NIV 26 Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead. GW 27 But in the LORD's presence we will all get ready for battle and go with you, as you have said." NIV 27 But your servants, every man armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says." GW 28 So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua (son of Nun), and the family heads of the tribes of Israel. NIV 28 Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes. GW 29 Moses told them, "If the tribes of Gad and Reuben get ready for battle in the LORD's presence and cross the Jordan River with you and you conquer the land, give them Gilead as their own property. NIV 29 He said to them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, give them the land of Gilead as their possession. GW 30 If they don't get ready for battle and go with you, the land they will take possession of must be in Canaan with yours." NIV 30 But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan." GW 31 The tribes of Gad and Reuben answered, "Sir, we will do as the LORD has said. NIV 31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has said. GW 32 We will enter Canaan as armed troops in the LORD's presence, but the land we will take possession of is here, east of the Jordan." NIV 32 We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan." GW 33 So Moses gave the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half of the tribe of Manasseh, son of Joseph, the kingdoms of King Sihon of the Amorites and King Og of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and its surrounding territory. NIV 33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.
