Numbers 32

HNV 1 Now the children of Re'uven and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Ya`zer, and the land of Gil`ad, that behold, the place was a place for cattle; NIV 1 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. HNV 2 the children of Gad and the children of Re'uven came and spoke to Moshe, and to El`azar the Kohen, and to the princes of the congregation, saying, NIV 2 So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, HNV 3 `Atrot, and Divon, and Ya`zer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and El`aleh, and Sevam, and Nevo, and Be`on, NIV 3 "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon-- HNV 4 the land which the LORD struck before the congregation of Yisra'el, is a land for cattle; and your servants have cattle. NIV 4 the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel--are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock. HNV 5 They said, If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; don't bring us over the Yarden. NIV 5 If we have found favor in your eyes," they said, "let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan." HNV 6 Moshe said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Re'uven, Shall your brothers go to the war, and shall you sit here? NIV 6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Shall your countrymen go to war while you sit here? HNV 7 Why discourage you the heart of the children of Yisra'el from going over into the land which the LORD has given them? NIV 7 Why do you discourage the Israelites from going over into the land the LORD has given them? HNV 8 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the land. NIV 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land. HNV 9 For when they went up to the valley of Eshkol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Yisra'el, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them. NIV 9 After they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them. HNV 10 The LORD's anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying, NIV 10 The LORD's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath: HNV 11 Surely none of the men who came up out of Mitzrayim, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya`akov; because they have not wholly followed me: NIV 11 'Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old or more who came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-- HNV 12 save Kalev the son of Yefunneh the Kenizzi, and Yehoshua the son of Nun; because they have wholly followed the LORD. NIV 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.' HNV 13 The LORD's anger was kindled against Yisra'el, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed. NIV 13 The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone. HNV 14 Behold, you are risen up in your fathers' place, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Yisra'el. NIV 14 "And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel. HNV 15 For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all this people. NIV 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the desert, and you will be the cause of their destruction." HNV 16 They came near to him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones: NIV 16 Then they came up to him and said, "We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children. HNV 17 but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Yisra'el, until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. NIV 17 But we are ready to arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. HNV 18 We will not return to our houses, until the children of Yisra'el have inherited every man his inheritance. NIV 18 We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his inheritance. HNV 19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Yarden, and forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Yarden eastward. NIV 19 We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan." HNV 20 Moshe said to them, If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before the LORD to the war, NIV 20 Then Moses said to them, "If you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle, HNV 21 and every armed man of you will pass over the Yarden before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him, NIV 21 and if all of you will go armed over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him-- HNV 22 and the land is subdued before the LORD; then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless towards the LORD, and towards Yisra'el; and this land shall be to you for a possession before the LORD. NIV 22 then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD. HNV 23 But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out. NIV 23 "But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. HNV 24 Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth. NIV 24 Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised." HNV 25 The children of Gad and the children of Re'uven spoke to Moshe, saying, Your servants will do as my lord commands. NIV 25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, "We your servants will do as our lord commands. HNV 26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gil`ad; NIV 26 Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead. HNV 27 but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord says. NIV 27 But your servants, every man armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says." HNV 28 So Moshe gave charge concerning them to El`azar the Kohen, and to Yehoshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the tribes of the children of Yisra'el. NIV 28 Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes. HNV 29 Moshe said to them, If the children of Gad and the children of Re'uven will pass with you over the Yarden, every man who is armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then you shall give them the land of Gil`ad for a possession: NIV 29 He said to them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, give them the land of Gilead as their possession. HNV 30 but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Kana`an. NIV 30 But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan." HNV 31 The children of Gad and the children of Re'uven answered, saying, As the LORD has said to your servants, so will we do. NIV 31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has said. HNV 32 We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Kana`an, and the possession of our inheritance [shall remain] with us beyond the Yarden. NIV 32 We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan." HNV 33 Moshe gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Re'uven, and to the half-tribe of Menashsheh the son of Yosef, the kingdom of Sichon king of the Amori, and the kingdom of `Og king of Bashan, the land, according to the cities of it with [their] borders, even the cities of the land round about. NIV 33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them. HNV 34 The children of Gad built Divon, and `Atrot, and `Aro`er, NIV 34 The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, HNV 35 and `Atrot-Shofan, and Ya`zer, and Yogbehah, NIV 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, HNV 36 and Beit-Nimrah, and Beth-haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep. NIV 36 Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks. HNV 37 The children of Re'uven built Heshbon, and El`aleh, and Kiryatayim, NIV 37 And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim, HNV 38 and Nevo, and Ba`al-Me`on, (their names being changed,) and Sivmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built. NIV 38 as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt. HNV 39 The children of Makhir the son of Menashsheh went to Gil`ad, and took it, and dispossessed the Amori who were therein. NIV 39 The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there. HNV 40 Moshe gave Gil`ad to Makhir the son of Menashsheh; and he lived therein. NIV 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. HNV 41 Ya'ir the son of Menashsheh went and took the towns of it, and called them Havvot-Ya'ir. NIV 41 Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair. HNV 42 Novach went and took Kenat, and the villages of it, and called it Novach, after his own name. NIV 42 And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.
