Numbers 5

RSV 1 The LORD said to Moses, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, RSV 2 "Command the people of Israel that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one having a discharge, and every one that is unclean through contact with the dead; NIV 2 "Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has an infectious skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. RSV 3 you shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell." NIV 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them." RSV 4 And the people of Israel did so, and drove them outside the camp; as the LORD said to Moses, so the people of Israel did. NIV 4 The Israelites did this; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses. RSV 5 And the LORD said to Moses, NIV 5 The LORD said to Moses, RSV 6 "Say to the people of Israel, When a man or woman commits any of the sins that men commit by breaking faith with the LORD, and that person is guilty, NIV 6 "Say to the Israelites: 'When a man or woman wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the LORD, that person is guilty RSV 7 he shall confess his sin which he has committed; and he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it, and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong. NIV 7 and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution for his wrong, add one fifth to it and give it all to the person he has wronged. RSV 8 But if the man has no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution for wrong shall go to the LORD for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement with which atonement is made for him. NIV 8 But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for him. RSV 9 And every offering, all the holy things of the people of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be his; NIV 9 All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. RSV 10 and every man's holy things shall be his; whatever any man gives to the priest shall be his." NIV 10 Each man's sacred gifts are his own, but what he gives to the priest will belong to the priest.' " RSV 11 And the LORD said to Moses, NIV 11 Then the LORD said to Moses, RSV 12 "Say to the people of Israel, If any man's wife goes astray and acts unfaithfully against him, NIV 12 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'If a man's wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him RSV 13 if a man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is undetected though she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her, since she was not taken in the act; NIV 13 by sleeping with another man, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), RSV 14 and if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife who has defiled herself; or if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, though she has not defiled herself; NIV 14 and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure--or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure-- RSV 15 then the man shall bring his wife to the priest, and bring the offering required of her, a tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it and put no frankincense on it, for it is a cereal offering of jealousy, a cereal offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance. NIV 15 then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder offering to draw attention to guilt. RSV 16 "And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD; NIV 16 " 'The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the LORD. RSV 17 and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. NIV 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. RSV 18 And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and unbind the hair of the woman's head, and place in her hands the cereal offering of remembrance, which is the cereal offering of jealousy. And in his hand the priest shall have the water of bitterness that brings the curse. NIV 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the LORD, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. RSV 19 Then the priest shall make her take an oath, saying, 'If no man has lain with you, and if you have not turned aside to uncleanness, while you were under your husband's authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings the curse. NIV 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. RSV 20 But if you have gone astray, though you are under your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself, and some man other than your husband has lain with you, NIV 20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have defiled yourself by sleeping with a man other than your husband"-- RSV 21 then' (let the priest make the woman take the oath of the curse, and say to the woman) 'the LORD make you an execration and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh fall away and your body swell; NIV 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse of the oath--"may the LORD cause your people to curse and denounce you when he causes your thigh to waste away and your abdomen to swell. RSV 22 may this water that brings the curse pass into your bowels and make your body swell and your thigh fall away.' And the woman shall say, 'Amen, Amen.' NIV 22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells and your thigh wastes away. " " 'Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So be it." RSV 23 "Then the priest shall write these curses in a book, and wash them off into the water of bitterness; NIV 23 " 'The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. RSV 24 and he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain. NIV 24 He shall have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water will enter her and cause bitter suffering. RSV 25 And the priest shall take the cereal offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the cereal offering before the LORD and bring it to the altar; NIV 25 The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD and bring it to the altar. RSV 26 and the priest shall take a handful of the cereal offering, as its memorial portion, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. NIV 26 The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. RSV 27 And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has acted unfaithfully against her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her body shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become an execration among her people. NIV 27 If she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then when she is made to drink the water that brings a curse, it will go into her and cause bitter suffering; her abdomen will swell and her thigh waste away, and she will become accursed among her people. RSV 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children. NIV 28 If, however, the woman has not defiled herself and is free from impurity, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children. RSV 29 "This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife, though under her husband's authority, goes astray and defiles herself, NIV 29 " 'This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and defiles herself while married to her husband, RSV 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes upon a man and he is jealous of his wife; then he shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law. NIV 30 or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the LORD and is to apply this entire law to her. RSV 31 The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her iniquity." NIV 31 The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.' "
