Numbers 8

RSV 1 Now the LORD said to Moses, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, RSV 2 "Say to Aaron, When you set up the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand." NIV 2 "Speak to Aaron and say to him, 'When you set up the seven lamps, they are to light the area in front of the lampstand.' " RSV 3 And Aaron did so; he set up its lamps to give light in front of the lampstand, as the LORD commanded Moses. NIV 3 Aaron did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as the LORD commanded Moses. RSV 4 And this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold; from its base to its flowers, it was hammered work; according to the pattern which the LORD had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand. NIV 4 This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered gold--from its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern the LORD had shown Moses. RSV 5 And the LORD said to Moses, NIV 5 The LORD said to Moses: RSV 6 "Take the Levites from among the people of Israel, and cleanse them. NIV 6 "Take the Levites from among the other Israelites and make them ceremonially clean. RSV 7 And thus you shall do to them, to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of expiation upon them, and let them go with a razor over all their body, and wash their clothes and cleanse themselves. NIV 7 To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes, and so purify themselves. RSV 8 Then let them take a young bull and its cereal offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you shall take another young bull for a sin offering. NIV 8 Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil; then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering. RSV 9 And you shall present the Levites before the tent of meeting, and assemble the whole congregation of the people of Israel. NIV 9 Bring the Levites to the front of the Tent of Meeting and assemble the whole Israelite community. RSV 10 When you present the Levites before the LORD, the people of Israel shall lay their hands upon the Levites, NIV 10 You are to bring the Levites before the LORD, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them. RSV 11 and Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the people of Israel, that it may be theirs to do the service of the LORD. NIV 11 Aaron is to present the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the LORD. RSV 12 Then the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bulls; and you shall offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering to the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites. NIV 12 "After the Levites lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, use the one for a sin offering to the LORD and the other for a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. RSV 13 And you shall cause the Levites to attend Aaron and his sons, and shall offer them as a wave offering to the LORD. NIV 13 Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering to the LORD. RSV 14 "Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the people of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine. NIV 14 In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine. RSV 15 And after that the Levites shall go in to do service at the tent of meeting, when you have cleansed them and offered them as a wave offering. NIV 15 "After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the Tent of Meeting. RSV 16 For they are wholly given to me from among the people of Israel; instead of all that open the womb, the first-born of all the people of Israel, I have taken them for myself. NIV 16 They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. RSV 17 For all the first-born among the people of Israel are mine, both of man and of beast; on the day that I slew all the first-born in the land of Egypt I consecrated them for myself, NIV 17 Every firstborn male in Israel, whether man or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. RSV 18 and I have taken the Levites instead of all the first-born among the people of Israel. NIV 18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel. RSV 19 And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the people of Israel, to do the service for the people of Israel at the tent of meeting, and to make atonement for the people of Israel, that there may be no plague among the people of Israel in case the people of Israel should come near the sanctuary." NIV 19 Of all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the Tent of Meeting on behalf of the Israelites and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary." RSV 20 Thus did Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the people of Israel to the Levites; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, the people of Israel did to them. NIV 20 Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the LORD commanded Moses. RSV 21 And the Levites purified themselves from sin, and washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them as a wave offering before the LORD, and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them. NIV 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the LORD and made atonement for them to purify them. RSV 22 And after that the Levites went in to do their service in the tent of meeting in attendance upon Aaron and his sons; as the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them. NIV 22 After that, the Levites came to do their work at the Tent of Meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the LORD commanded Moses. RSV 23 And the LORD said to Moses, NIV 23 The LORD said to Moses, RSV 24 "This is what pertains to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward they shall go in to perform the work in the service of the tent of meeting; NIV 24 "This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the Tent of Meeting, RSV 25 and from the age of fifty years they shall withdraw from the work of the service and serve no more, NIV 25 but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. RSV 26 but minister to their brethren in the tent of meeting, to keep the charge, and they shall do no service. Thus shall you do to the Levites in assigning their duties." NIV 26 They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the Tent of Meeting, but they themselves must not do the work. This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites."
