1 Ciudades para los levitas<br />Mientras Israel acampaba junto al Jordán, en las llanuras de Moab, frente a Jericó, el Señor<br /> le dijo a Moisés:

On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, the LORD said to Moses,
2 «Ordena a los israelitas que, de las propiedades que recibieron, entreguen a los levitas algunas ciudades donde vivir, junto con los pastizales que las rodean.

“Command the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. And give them pasturelands around the towns.
3 Los levitas vivirán en esas ciudades y las tierras que las rodean proveerán pastura para su ganado, rebaños y otros animales.

Then they will have towns to live in and pasturelands for the cattle they own and all their other animals.
4 Los pastizales alrededor de esas ciudades, asignados a los levitas, se extenderán por cuatrocientos sesenta metros<br /> a partir de las murallas de las ciudades en todas direcciones.

“The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits from the town wall.
5 Midan novecientos veinte metros<br /> afuera de las murallas de las ciudades en cada dirección —oriente, sur, occidente y norte— y la ciudad quedará en el centro. Esta área será otro pastizal, aún más grande para las ciudades.

Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits on the east side, two thousand on the south side, two thousand on the west and two thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns.
6 »Seis de las ciudades que entreguen a los levitas serán ciudades de refugio, adonde una persona que haya matado a alguien por accidente pueda huir y ponerse a salvo. Además entréguenles otras cuarenta y dos ciudades.

“Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. In addition, give them forty-two other towns.
7 En total, darás a los levitas cuarenta y ocho ciudades con los pastizales que las rodean.

In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands.
8 Estas ciudades las tomarán de las propiedades del pueblo de Israel. Las tribus más grandes darán más ciudades a los levitas, mientras que las tribus más pequeñas darán menos. Cada tribu dará terreno en proporción al tamaño de la tierra que recibió».

The towns you give the Levites from the land the Israelites possess are to be given in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: Take many towns from a tribe that has many, but few from one that has few.”
9 Ciudades de refugio<br />El Señor<br /> le dijo a Moisés:

Then the LORD said to Moses:
10 «Dale las siguientes instrucciones al pueblo de Israel: cuando crucen el Jordán para entrar a la tierra de Canaán,

“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you cross the Jordan into Canaan,
11 designen ciudades de refugio adonde una persona pueda huir si ha matado a alguien por accidente.

select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee.
12 Estas ciudades servirán como lugares de protección contra los parientes de la víctima que quieran vengar la muerte. No se le quitará la vida al responsable de la muerte antes de que la comunidad lo juzgue.

They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that anyone accused of murder may not die before they stand trial before the assembly.
13 Designen seis ciudades de refugio para ustedes mismos:

These six towns you give will be your cities of refuge.
14 tres al oriente del río Jordán y tres al occidente, en la tierra de Canaán.

Give three on this side of the Jordan and three in Canaan as cities of refuge.
15 Estas ciudades servirán para proteger a los israelitas, a los extranjeros que vivan entre ustedes y a los comerciantes ambulantes. Cualquiera que mate a alguien por accidente podrá huir allí para ponerse a salvo.

These six towns will be a place of refuge for Israelites and for foreigners residing among them, so that anyone who has killed another accidentally can flee there.
16 »Sin embargo, si alguien golpea y mata a otro con un objeto de hierro, comete homicidio y el asesino debe ser ejecutado.

“ ‘If anyone strikes someone a fatal blow with an iron object, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death.

Or if anyone is holding a stone and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death.

Or if anyone is holding a wooden object and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death.
19 El pariente más cercano de la víctima es responsable de quitarle la vida al asesino. Cuando ellos se encuentren, el vengador debe quitarle la vida al asesino.

The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when the avenger comes upon the murderer, the avenger shall put the murderer to death.

If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at them intentionally so that they die

or if out of enmity one person hits another with their fist so that the other dies, that person is to be put to death; that person is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when they meet.

“ ‘But if without enmity someone suddenly pushes another or throws something at them unintentionally

or, without seeing them, drops on them a stone heavy enough to kill them, and they die, then since that other person was not an enemy and no harm was intended,
24 Si esto llegara a suceder, la comunidad debe seguir las siguientes normas al juzgar entre el responsable de la muerte y el vengador, el pariente más cercano de la víctima.

the assembly must judge between the accused and the avenger of blood according to these regulations.
25 La comunidad debe proteger al responsable de la muerte del vengador y debe escoltarlo para que regrese a vivir en la ciudad de refugio a la que huyó. Allí permanecerá hasta la muerte del sumo sacerdote, que fue ungido con el aceite sagrado.

The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send the accused back to the city of refuge to which they fled. The accused must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.
26 »Sin embargo, si el responsable de la muerte alguna vez sale de los límites de la ciudad de refugio,

“ ‘But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which they fled

and the avenger of blood finds them outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder.
28 El responsable de la muerte debió haber permanecido dentro de la ciudad de refugio hasta la muerte del sumo sacerdote; pero después de la muerte del sumo sacerdote, el responsable de la muerte podrá volver a su propia tierra.

The accused must stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may they return to their own property.
29 Estos son requisitos legales y tendrán que cumplirse de generación en generación, dondequiera que vivan.

“ ‘This is to have the force of law for you throughout the generations to come, wherever you live.
30 »Todos los asesinos deben ser ejecutados, pero solo si las pruebas son presentadas por más de un testigo. No se puede condenar a muerte a nadie por el testimonio de un solo testigo.

“ ‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.
31 Tampoco se aceptará el pago de rescate por la vida de alguien que haya sido juzgado y encontrado culpable de asesinato y condenado a muerte; siempre se debe ejecutar a los asesinos.

“ ‘Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. They are to be put to death.
32 Nunca acepten el pago de rescate de alguien que haya huido a una ciudad de refugio, pues haría que el responsable de la muerte de alguien volviera a su tierra antes de la muerte del sumo sacerdote.

“ ‘Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow them to go back and live on their own land before the death of the high priest.
33 Esto garantizará que la tierra donde ustedes vivan no se contamine, pues el asesinato contamina la tierra. Y ningún sacrificio, salvo la ejecución del asesino, puede purificar la tierra del asesinato.

“ ‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.
34 No deben manchar la tierra donde viven, porque yo mismo habito allí. Yo soy el Señor<br /> que habito entre el pueblo de Israel».

Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.’ ”
