Philippians 2

RSV 1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, NIV 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, RSV 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. NIV 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. RSV 3 Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. NIV 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. RSV 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. NIV 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. RSV 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, NIV 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: RSV 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, NIV 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, RSV 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. NIV 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. RSV 8 And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. NIV 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! RSV 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, NIV 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, RSV 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, NIV 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, RSV 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. NIV 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. RSV 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; NIV 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, RSV 13 for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. NIV 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. RSV 14 Do all things without grumbling or questioning, NIV 14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, RSV 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, NIV 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe RSV 16 holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. NIV 16 as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. RSV 17 Even if I am to be poured as a libation upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. NIV 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. RSV 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. NIV 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. RSV 19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I may be cheered by news of you. NIV 19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. RSV 20 I have no one like him, who will be genuinely anxious for your welfare. NIV 20 I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. RSV 21 They all look after their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. NIV 21 For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. RSV 22 But Timothy's worth you know, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. NIV 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. RSV 23 I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me; NIV 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. RSV 24 and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself shall come also. NIV 24 And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon. RSV 25 I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphrodi'tus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need, NIV 25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. RSV 26 for he has been longing for you all, and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill. NIV 26 For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. RSV 27 Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. NIV 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. RSV 28 I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious. NIV 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. RSV 29 So receive him in the Lord with all joy; and honor such men, NIV 29 Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, RSV 30 for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete your service to me. NIV 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me.
