CJB 1 The proverbs of Shlomo: A wise son is a joy to his father, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother. NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother. CJB 2 No good comes from ill-gotten wealth, but righteousness rescues from death. NIV 2 Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death. CJB 3 ADONAI does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. NIV 3 The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. CJB 4 Idle hands bring poverty; diligent hands bring wealth. NIV 4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. CJB 5 A sensible person gathers in summer, but he who sleeps during harvest is an embarrassment. CJB 6 Blessings are for the head of the righteous, but the speech of the wicked is a cover for violence. NIV 13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment. CJB 14 Wise people hide their knowledge, but when a fool speaks, ruin is imminent. NIV 14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. CJB 15 The wealth of the rich is his fortified city; the ruin of the poor is their poverty. NIV 15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor. CJB 16 The activity of the righteous is for life; the income of the wicked is for sin. NIV 16 The wages of the righteous bring them life, but the income of the wicked brings them punishment. CJB 17 He who observes discipline is on the way to life; but he who ignores correction is making a mistake. NIV 17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. CJB 18 He who covers up hate has lips that lie, and anyone who slanders is a fool. NIV 18 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. CJB 19 When words are many, sin is not lacking; so he who controls his speech is wise. NIV 19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. CJB 20 The tongue of the righteous is like pure silver, but the mind of the wicked is worth little. NIV 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. CJB 21 The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense. NIV 21 The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment. CJB 22 The blessing of ADONAI is what makes people rich, and he doesn't mix sorrow with it. NIV 22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. CJB 23 To a fool, vileness is like a game, as is wisdom to a person of discernment. NIV 23 A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom. CJB 24 What a fool dreads will overtake him, but the righteous will be given his desire. NIV 24 What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted. CJB 25 When the storm has passed, the wicked are gone; but the righteous are firmly established forever. NIV 25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever. CJB 26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes is a lazy person to his employer. NIV 29 The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil. CJB 30 The righteous will never be moved, but the wicked will not remain in the land. NIV 30 The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land. CJB 31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off. NIV 31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out. CJB 32 The lips of the righteous know what is wanted, but the mouth of the wicked [knows] deceit. NIV 32 The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
