Proverbs 14

NAS 1 The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands. NIV 1 The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. NAS 2 He who walks in his uprightness fears the LORD , But he who is devious in his ways despises Him. NIV 2 He whose walk is upright fears the LORD, but he whose ways are devious despises him. NAS 3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for his back, But the lips of the wise will protect them. NIV 3 A fool's talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them. NAS 4 Where no oxen are, the manger is clean, But much revenue comes by the strength of the ox. NIV 4 Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest. NAS 5 A trustworthy witness will not lie, But a false witness utters lies. NIV 5 A truthful witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies. NAS 6 A scoffer seeks wisdom and finds none, But knowledge is easy to one who has understanding. NIV 6 The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning. NAS 7 Leave the presence of a fool, Or you will not discern words of knowledge. NIV 7 Stay away from a foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips. NAS 8 The wisdom of the sensible is to understand his way, But the foolishness of fools is deceit. NIV 8 The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception. NAS 9 Fools mock at sin, But among the upright there is good will. NIV 9 Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright. NAS 10 The heart knows its own bitterness, And a stranger does not share its joy. NIV 10 Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy. NAS 11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed, But the tent of the upright will flourish. NIV 11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. NAS 12 There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. NIV 12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. NAS 13 Even in laughter the heart may be in pain, And the end of joy may be grief. NIV 13 Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end in grief. NAS 14 The backslider in heart will have his fill of his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied with his. NIV 14 The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways, and the good man rewarded for his. NAS 15 The naive believes everything, But the sensible man considers his steps. NIV 15 A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps. NAS 16 A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, But a fool is arrogant and careless. NIV 16 A wise man fears the LORD and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless. NAS 17 A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, And a man of evil devices is hated. NIV 17 A quick-tempered man does foolish things, and a crafty man is hated. NAS 18 The naive inherit foolishness, But the sensible are crowned with knowledge. NIV 18 The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge. NAS 19 The evil will bow down before the good, And the wicked at the gates of the righteous. NIV 19 Evil men will bow down in the presence of the good, and the wicked at the gates of the righteous. NAS 20 The poor is hated even by his neighbor, But those who love the rich are many. NIV 20 The poor are shunned even by their neighbors, but the rich have many friends. NAS 21 He who despises his neighbor sins, But happy is he who is gracious to the poor. NIV 21 He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy. NAS 22 Will they not go astray who devise evil? But kindness and truth will be to those who devise good. NIV 22 Do not those who plot evil go astray? But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness. NAS 23 In all labor there is profit, But mere talk leads only to poverty. NIV 23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. NAS 24 The crown of the wise is their riches, But the folly of fools is foolishness. NIV 24 The wealth of the wise is their crown, but the folly of fools yields folly. NAS 25 A truthful witness saves lives, But he who utters lies is treacherous. NIV 25 A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful. NAS 26 In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And his children will have refuge. NIV 26 He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. NAS 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, That one may avoid the snares of death. NIV 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. NAS 28 In a multitude of people is a king's glory, But in the dearth of people is a prince's ruin. NIV 28 A large population is a king's glory, but without subjects a prince is ruined. NAS 29 He who is slow to anger has great understanding, But he who is quick-tempered exalts folly. NIV 29 A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. NAS 30 A tranquil heart is life to the body, But passion is rottenness to the bones. NIV 30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. NAS 31 He who oppresses the poor taunts his Maker, But he who is gracious to the needy honors Him. NIV 31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. NAS 32 The wicked is thrust down by his wrongdoing, But the righteous has a refuge when he dies. NIV 32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous have a refuge. NAS 33 Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding, But in the hearts of fools it is made known. NIV 33 Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning and even among fools she lets herself be known. NAS 34 Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people. NIV 34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. NAS 35 The king's favor is toward a servant who acts wisely, But his anger is toward him who acts shamefully. NIV 35 A king delights in a wise servant, but a shameful servant incurs his wrath.
