NRS 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: NRS 2 For learning about wisdom and instruction, for understanding words of insight, NIV 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; NRS 3 for gaining instruction in wise dealing, righteousness, justice, and equity; NIV 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; NRS 4 to teach shrewdness to the simple, knowledge and prudence to the young— NIV 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-- NRS 5 let the wise also hear and gain in learning, and the discerning acquire skill, NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-- NRS 6 to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. NRS 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
