Proverbs 1:8-33

CEBA

NIV

8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction; don't neglect your mother's teaching;
8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 for they are a graceful wreath on your head, and beads for your neck.
9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
10 My son, don't let sinners entice you. Don't go
10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.
11 when they say: "Come with us. Let's set up a deadly ambush. Let's secretly wait for the innocent just for fun.
11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 Let's swallow up the living like the grave— whole, like those who go down into the pit.
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 We'll find all sorts of precious wealth; we'll fill our houses with plunder.
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
14 Throw in your lot with us; we'll share our money."
14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”—
15 My son, don't go on the path with them; keep your feet from their way,
15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
16 because their feet run to evil; they hurry to spill blood.
16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood.
17 It's useless to cast a net in the sight of a bird.
17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it!
18 But these sinners set up a deadly ambush; they lie in wait for their own lives.
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves!
19 These are the ways of all who seek unjust gain; it costs them their lives.
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.
20 Wisdom shouts in the street; in the public square she raises her voice.
20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square;
21 Above the noisy crowd, she calls out. At the entrances of the city gates, she has her say:
21 on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech:
22 "How long will you clueless people love your naïveté, mockers hold their mocking dear, and fools hate knowledge?
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
23 You should respond when I correct you. Look, I'll pour out my spirit on you. I'll reveal my words to you.
23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings.
24 I invited you, but you rejected me; I stretched out my hand to you, but you paid no attention.
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
25 You ignored all my advice, and you didn't want me to correct you.
25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke,
26 So I'll laugh at your disaster; I'll make fun of you when dread comes over you,
26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you—
27 when terror hits you like a hurricane, and your disaster comes in like a tornado, when distress and oppression overcome you.
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will seek me, but won't find me
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,
29 because they hated knowledge and didn't choose the fear of the LORD.
29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD.
30 They didn't want my advice; they rejected all my corrections.
30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
31 They will eat from the fruit of their way, and they'll be full of their own schemes.
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 The immature will die because they turn away; smugness will destroy fools.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 Those who obey me will dwell securely, untroubled by the dread of harm."
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
