Proverbs 5

CSB 1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen closely to my understanding NIV 1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, CSB 2 so that [you] may maintain discretion and your lips safeguard knowledge. NIV 2 that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. CSB 3 Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey and her words are smoother than oil, NIV 3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; CSB 4 in the end she's as bitter as wormwood and as sharp as a double-edged sword. NIV 4 but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. CSB 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps head straight for Sheol. NIV 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. CSB 6 She doesn't consider the path of life; she doesn't know that her ways are unstable. NIV 6 She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths are crooked, but she knows it not. CSB 7 So now, [my] sons, listen to me, and don't turn away from the words of my mouth. NIV 7 Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. CSB 8 Keep your way far from her. Don't go near the door of her house. NIV 8 Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, CSB 9 Otherwise, you will give up your vitality to others and your years to someone cruel; NIV 9 lest you give your best strength to others and your years to one who is cruel, CSB 10 strangers will drain your resources, and your earnings will end up in a foreigner's house. NIV 10 lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich another man's house. CSB 11 At the end of your life, you will lament when your physical body has been consumed, NIV 11 At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. CSB 12 and you will say, "How I hated discipline, and how my heart despised correction. NIV 12 You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! CSB 13 I didn't obey my teachers or listen closely to my mentors. NIV 13 I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors. CSB 14 I was on the verge of complete ruin before the entire community." NIV 14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly." CSB 15 Drink water from your own cistern, water flowing from your own well. NIV 15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. CSB 16 Should your springs flow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares? NIV 16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? CSB 17 They should be for you alone and not for you [to share] with strangers. NIV 17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. CSB 18 Let your fountain be blessed, and take pleasure in the wife of your youth. NIV 18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. CSB 19 A loving doe, a graceful fawn- let her breasts always satisfy you; be lost in her love forever. NIV 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer-- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. CSB 20 Why, my son, would you be infatuated with a forbidden woman or embrace the breast of a stranger? NIV 20 Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife? CSB 21 For a man's ways are before the Lord's eyes, and He considers all his paths. NIV 21 For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths. CSB 22 A wicked man's iniquities entrap him; he is entangled in the ropes of his own sin. NIV 22 The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. CSB 23 He will die because there is no instruction, and be lost because of his great stupidity. NIV 23 He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.
