Psalm 12

RSV 1 To the choirmaster: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David. Help, LORD; for there is no longer any that is godly; for the faithful have vanished from among the sons of men. NIV 1 Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. RSV 2 Every one utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. NIV 2 Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception. RSV 3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, NIV 3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue RSV 4 those who say, "With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is our master?" NIV 4 that says, "We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips--who is our master?" RSV 5 "Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan, I will now arise," says the LORD; "I will place him in the safety for which he longs." NIV 5 "Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them." RSV 6 The promises of the LORD are promises that are pure, silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. NIV 6 And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times. RSV 7 Do thou, O LORD, protect us, guard us ever from this generation. NIV 7 O LORD, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever. RSV 8 On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the sons of men. NIV 8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.
