HNV 1 <<A Ma`alot Song. By Shlomo.>> Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, The watchman guards it in vain. NIV 1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. HNV 2 It is vain for you to rise up early, To stay up late, Eating the bread of toil; For he gives sleep to his loved ones. NIV 2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for he grants sleep to those he loves. HNV 3 Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward. NIV 3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. HNV 4 As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, So are the children of youth. NIV 4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. HNV 5 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They won't be put to shame when they speak with their enemies in the gate. NIV 5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.
