GOD'S WORD Translation

New International Version

Psalm 129

GW 1 "From the time I was young, people have attacked me..." (Israel should repeat this.) NIV 1 They have greatly oppressed me from my youth-- let Israel say-- GW 2 "From the time I was young, people have attacked me, but they have never overpowered me. NIV 2 they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me. GW 3 They have plowed my back [like farmers plow fields]. They made long slashes [like furrows]." NIV 3 Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long. GW 4 The LORD is righteous. He has cut me loose from the ropes that wicked people tied around me. NIV 4 But the LORD is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked. GW 5 Put to shame all those who hate Zion. Force them to retreat. NIV 5 May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame. GW 6 Make them be like grass on a roof, like grass that dries up before it produces a stalk. NIV 6 May they be like grass on the roof, which withers before it can grow; GW 7 It will never fill the barns of those who harvest or the arms of those who gather bundles. NIV 7 with it the reaper cannot fill his hands, nor the one who gathers fill his arms. GW 8 Those who pass by will never say [to them], "May you be blessed by the LORD" or "We bless you in the name of the LORD." NIV 8 May those who pass by not say, "The blessing of the LORD be upon you; we bless you in the name of the LORD."
