Psalm 18

BBE 1 <To the chief music-maker. Of the servant of the Lord, of David, who said the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord made him free from the hand of all his haters, and from the hand of Saul; and he said,> I will give you my love, O Lord, my strength. NIV 1 I love you, O LORD, my strength. BBE 2 The Lord is my Rock, my walled town, and my saviour; my God, my Rock, in him will I put my faith; my breastplate, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. NIV 2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. BBE 3 I will send up my cry to the Lord, who is to be praised; so will I be made safe from those who are against me. NIV 3 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. BBE 4 The cords of death were round me, and the seas of evil put me in fear. NIV 4 The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. BBE 5 The cords of hell were round me: the nets of death came on me. NIV 5 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. BBE 6 In my trouble my voice went up to the Lord, and my cry to my God: my voice came to his hearing in his holy Temple, and my prayer came before him, even into his ears. NIV 6 In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. BBE 7 Then trouble and shock came on the earth; and the bases of the mountains were moved and shaking, because he was angry. NIV 7 The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. BBE 8 There went up a smoke from his nose, and a fire of destruction from his mouth: flames were lighted by it. NIV 8 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. BBE 9 The heavens were bent, so that he might come down; and it was dark under his feet. NIV 9 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. BBE 10 And he went in flight through the air, seated on a storm-cloud: going quickly on the wings of the wind. NIV 10 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. BBE 11 He made the dark his secret place; his tent round him was the dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. NIV 11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him-- the dark rain clouds of the sky. BBE 12 Before his shining light his dark clouds went past, raining ice and fire. NIV 12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. BBE 13 The Lord made thunder in the heavens, and the voice of the Highest was sounding out: a rain of ice and fire. NIV 13 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. BBE 14 He sent out his arrows, driving them in all directions; by his flames of fire they were troubled. NIV 14 He shot his arrows and scattered [the enemies], great bolts of lightning and routed them. BBE 15 Then the deep beds of the waters were seen, and the bases of the world were uncovered, because of your words of wrath, O Lord, because of the breath from your mouth. NIV 15 The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of breath from your nostrils. BBE 16 He sent from on high, he took me, pulling me out of great waters. NIV 16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. BBE 17 He made me free from my strong hater, and from those who were against me, because they were stronger than I. NIV 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. BBE 18 They came on me in the day of my trouble; but the Lord was my support. NIV 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. BBE 19 He took me out into a wide place; he was my saviour because he had delight in me. NIV 19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. BBE 20 The Lord gives me the reward of my righteousness, because my hands are clean before him. NIV 20 The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. BBE 21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not been turned away in sin from my God. NIV 21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not done evil by turning from my God. BBE 22 For all his decisions were before me, and I did not put away his laws from me. NIV 22 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. BBE 23 And I was upright before him, and I kept myself from sin. NIV 23 I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. BBE 24 Because of this the Lord has given me the reward of my righteousness, because my hands are clean in his eyes. NIV 24 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight. BBE 25 On him who has mercy you will have mercy; to the upright you will be upright; NIV 25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, BBE 26 He who is holy will see that you are holy; but to the man whose way is not straight you will be a hard judge. NIV 26 to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. BBE 27 For you are the saviour of those who are in trouble; but eyes full of pride will be made low. NIV 27 You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty. BBE 28 You, O Lord, will be my light; by you, my God, the dark will be made bright for me. NIV 28 You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. BBE 29 By your help I have made a way through the wall which was shutting me in; by the help of my God I have gone over a wall. NIV 29 With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. BBE 30 As for God, his way is completely good; the word of the Lord is tested; he is a breastplate for all those who put their faith in him. NIV 30 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. BBE 31 For who is God but the Lord? or who is a Rock but our God? NIV 31 For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? BBE 32 God puts a strong band about me, guiding me in a straight way. NIV 32 It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. BBE 33 He makes my feet like roes' feet, and puts me on high places. NIV 33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. BBE 34 He makes my hands expert in war, so that a bow of brass is bent by my arms. NIV 34 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. BBE 35 You have given me the breastplate of your salvation: your right hand has been my support, and your mercy has made me great. NIV 35 You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great. BBE 36 You have made my steps wide under me, so that my feet are kept from slipping. NIV 36 You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn. BBE 37 I go after my haters and overtake them; not turning back till they are all overcome. NIV 37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. BBE 38 I will give them wounds, so that they are not able to get up: they are stretched under my feet. NIV 38 I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. BBE 39 For I have been armed by you with strength for the fight: you have made low under me those who come out against me. NIV 39 You armed me with strength for battle; you made my adversaries bow at my feet. BBE 40 By you their backs are turned in flight, so that my haters are cut off. NIV 40 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. BBE 41 They were crying out, but there was no one to come to their help: even to the Lord, but he gave them no answer. NIV 41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them-- to the LORD, but he did not answer. BBE 42 Then they were crushed as small as dust before the wind; they were drained out like the waste of the streets. NIV 42 I beat them as fine as dust borne on the wind; I poured them out like mud in the streets. BBE 43 You have made me free from the fightings of the people; you have made me the head of the nations: a people of whom I had no knowledge will be my servants. NIV 43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people; you have made me the head of nations; people I did not know are subject to me. BBE 44 From the time when my name comes to their ears they will be ruled by me: men of other countries will, with false hearts, put themselves under my authority. NIV 44 As soon as they hear me, they obey me; foreigners cringe before me. BBE 45 They will be wasting away, they will come out of their secret places shaking with fear. NIV 45 They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. BBE 46 The Lord is living; praise be to my Rock, and let the God of my salvation be honoured. NIV 46 The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior! BBE 47 It is God who sends punishment on my haters, and puts peoples under my rule. NIV 47 He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me, BBE 48 He makes me free from my haters; I am lifted up over those who come up against me: you have made me free from the violent man. NIV 48 who saves me from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from violent men you rescued me. BBE 49 Because of this I will give you praise, O Lord, among the nations, and will make a song of praise to your name. NIV 49 Therefore I will praise you among the nations, O LORD; I will sing praises to your name. BBE 50 Great salvation does he give to his king; he has mercy on the king of his selection, David, and on his seed for ever. NIV 50 He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.
