Psalm 22

RSV 1 To the choirmaster: according to The Hind of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? NIV 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? RSV 2 O my God, I cry by day, but thou dost not answer; and by night, but find no rest. NIV 2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. RSV 3 Yet thou art holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. NIV 3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. RSV 4 In thee our fathers trusted; they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. NIV 4 In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. RSV 5 To thee they cried, and were saved; in thee they trusted, and were not disappointed. NIV 5 They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed. RSV 6 But I am a worm, and no man; scorned by men, and despised by the people. NIV 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. RSV 7 All who see me mock at me, they make mouths at me, they wag their heads; NIV 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: RSV 8 "He committed his cause to the LORD; let him deliver him, let him rescue him, for he delights in him!" NIV 8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." RSV 9 Yet thou art he who took me from the womb; thou didst keep me safe upon my mother's breasts. NIV 9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother's breast. RSV 10 Upon thee was I cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me thou hast been my God. NIV 10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. RSV 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near and there is none to help. NIV 11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. RSV 12 Many bulls encompass me, strong bulls of Bashan surround me; NIV 12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. RSV 16 Yea, dogs are round about me; a company of evildoers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and feet-- NIV 16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. RSV 17 I can count all my bones--they stare and gloat over me; NIV 17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. RSV 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my raiment they cast lots. NIV 18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. RSV 19 But thou, O LORD, be not far off! O thou my help, hasten to my aid! NIV 19 But you, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me. RSV 20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my life from the power of the dog! RSV 22 I will tell of thy name to my brethren; in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee: NIV 22 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you. RSV 23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! all you sons of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you sons of Israel! NIV 23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! RSV 24 For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; and he has not hid his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. NIV 24 For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. RSV 25 From thee comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him. NIV 25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows. RSV 26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live for ever! NIV 26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will praise him-- may your hearts live forever! RSV 27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. NIV 27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, RSV 28 For dominion belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. NIV 28 for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations. RSV 29 Yea, to him shall all the proud of the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and he who cannot keep himself alive. NIV 29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him-- those who cannot keep themselves alive. RSV 30 Posterity shall serve him; men shall tell of the Lord to the coming generation, NIV 30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. RSV 31 and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, that he has wrought it. NIV 31 They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn-- for he has done it.
