Psalm 31

DBY 1 {To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David.} In thee, Jehovah, do I trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. NIV 1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. DBY 2 Incline thine ear to me, deliver me speedily; be a strong rock to me, a house of defence to save me. NIV 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. DBY 3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; and, for thy name's sake, thou wilt lead me and guide me. NIV 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. DBY 4 Draw me out of the net that they have hidden for me; for thou art my strength. NIV 4 Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. DBY 5 Into thy hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, Jehovah, [thou] God of truth. NIV 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth. DBY 6 I have hated them that observe lying vanities; and as for me, I have confided in Jehovah. NIV 6 I hate those who cling to worthless idols; I trust in the LORD. DBY 7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy loving-kindness, for thou hast seen mine affliction; thou hast known the troubles of my soul, NIV 7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. DBY 8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large place. NIV 8 You have not handed me over to the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place. DBY 9 Be gracious unto me, Jehovah, for I am in trouble: mine eye wasteth away with vexation, my soul and my belly. NIV 9 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief. DBY 10 For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength faileth through mine iniquity, and my bones are wasted. NIV 10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. DBY 11 More than to all mine oppressors, I am become exceedingly a reproach, even to my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that see me without flee from me. NIV 11 Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors; I am a dread to my friends-- those who see me on the street flee from me. DBY 12 I am forgotten in [their] heart as a dead man; I am become like a broken vessel. NIV 12 I am forgotten by them as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. DBY 13 For I have heard the slander of many -- terror on every side -- when they take counsel together against me: they plot to take away my life. NIV 13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror on every side; they conspire against me and plot to take my life. DBY 14 But I confided in thee, Jehovah; I said, thou art my God. NIV 14 But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, "You are my God." DBY 15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from my persecutors. NIV 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me. DBY 16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; save me in thy loving-kindness. NIV 16 Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. DBY 17 Jehovah, let me not be ashamed; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, let them be silent in Sheol. NIV 17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I have cried out to you; but let the wicked be put to shame and lie silent in the grave. DBY 18 Let the lying lips become dumb, which speak insolently against the righteous in pride and contempt. NIV 18 Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous. DBY 19 [Oh] how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee, [which] thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee, before the sons of men! NIV 19 How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you. DBY 20 Thou keepest them concealed in the secret of thy presence from the conspiracies of man; thou hidest them in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. NIV 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues. DBY 21 Blessed be Jehovah; for he hath shewn me wondrously his loving-kindness in a strong city. NIV 21 Praise be to the LORD, for he showed his wonderful love to me when I was in a besieged city. DBY 22 As for me, I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes; nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee. NIV 22 In my alarm I said, "I am cut off from your sight!" Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. DBY 23 Love Jehovah, all ye his saints. Jehovah preserveth the faithful, and plentifully requiteth the proud doer. NIV 23 Love the LORD, all his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful, but the proud he pays back in full. DBY 24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all ye that hope in Jehovah. NIV 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.
