Psalm 35

CSB 1 Oppose my opponents, Lord; fight those who fight me. NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. CSB 2 Take Your shields-large and small- and come to my aid. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. CSB 3 Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers, and assure me: "I am your deliverance." NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." CSB 4 Let those who seek to kill me be disgraced and humiliated; let those who plan to harm me be turned back and ashamed. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. CSB 5 Let them be like husks in the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them away. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; CSB 6 Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. CSB 7 They hid their net for me without cause; they dug a pit for me without cause. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, CSB 8 Let ruin come on him unexpectedly, and let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it-to his ruin. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. CSB 9 Then I will rejoice in the Lord; I will delight in His deliverance. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. CSB 10 My very bones will say, "Lord, who is like You, rescuing the poor from one too strong for him, the poor or the needy from one who robs him?" NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." CSB 11 Malicious witnesses come forward; they question me about things I do not know. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. CSB 12 They repay me evil for good, making me desolate. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. CSB 13 Yet when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting, and my prayer was genuine. NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, CSB 14 I went about [grieving] as if for my friend or brother; I was bowed down with grief, like one mourning a mother. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. CSB 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; they gathered against me. Assailants I did not know tore at me and did not stop. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. CSB 16 With godless mockery they gnashed their teeth at me. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. CSB 17 Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my very life from the young lions. NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. CSB 18 I will praise You in the great congregation; I will exalt You among many people. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. CSB 19 Do not let my deceitful enemies rejoice over me; do not let those who hate me without cause look at me maliciously. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. CSB 20 For they do not speak in friendly ways, but contrive deceitful schemes against those who live peacefully in the land. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. CSB 21 They open their mouths wide against me and say, "Aha, aha! We saw it!" NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." CSB 22 You saw it, Lord; do not be silent. Lord, do not be far from me. NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. CSB 23 Wake up and rise to my defense, to my cause, my God and my Lord! NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. CSB 24 Vindicate me, Lord, my God, in keeping with Your righteousness, and do not let them rejoice over me. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. CSB 25 Do not let them say in their hearts, "Aha! Just what we wanted." Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up!" NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." CSB 26 Let those who rejoice at my misfortune be disgraced and humiliated; let those who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and reproach. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. CSB 27 Let those who want my vindication shout for joy and be glad; let them continually say, "The Lord be exalted, who wants His servant's well-being." NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." CSB 28 And my tongue will proclaim Your righteousness, Your praise all day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
