Psalm 35

ESV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. ESV 2 Take hold of shield and buckler and rise for my help! NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. ESV 3 Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers! Say to my soul, "I am your salvation!" NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." ESV 4 Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me! NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. ESV 5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away! NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; ESV 6 Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them! NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. ESV 7 For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, ESV 8 Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it! And let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it--to his destruction! NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. ESV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. ESV 10 All my bones shall say, "O LORD, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?" NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." ESV 11 Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. ESV 12 They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. ESV 13 But I, when they were sick-- I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest. NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, ESV 14 I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; as one who laments his mother, I bowed down in mourning. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. ESV 15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered; they gathered together against me; wretches whom I did not know tore at me without ceasing; NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. ESV 16 like profane mockers at a feast, they gnash at me with their teeth. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. ESV 17 How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. ESV 18 I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. ESV 19 Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those wink the eye who hate me without cause. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. ESV 20 For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. ESV 21 They open wide their mouths against me; they say, "Aha, Aha! Our eyes have seen it!" NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." ESV 22 You have seen, O LORD; be not silent! O Lord, be not far from me! NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. ESV 23 Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord! NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. ESV 24 Vindicate me, O LORD, my God, according to your righteousness, and let them not rejoice over me! NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. ESV 25 Let them not say in their hearts, "Aha, our heart's desire!" Let them not say, "We have swallowed him up." NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." ESV 26 Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me! NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. ESV 27 Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, "Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!" NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." ESV 28 Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
