Psalm 35

GW 1 O LORD, attack those who attack me. Fight against those who fight against me. NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. GW 2 Use your shields, [both] small and large. Arise to help me. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. GW 3 Hold your spear to block the way of those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your savior." NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." GW 4 Let those who seek my life be put to shame and disgraced. Let those who plan my downfall be turned back in confusion. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. GW 5 Let them be like husks blown by the wind as the Messenger of the LORD chases them. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; GW 6 Let their path be dark and slippery as the Messenger of the LORD pursues them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. GW 7 For no reason they hid their net in a pit. For no reason they dug the pit [to trap me]. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, GW 8 Let destruction surprise them. Let the net that they hid catch them. Let them fall into their own pit and be destroyed. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. GW 9 My soul will find joy in the LORD and be joyful about his salvation. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. GW 10 All my bones will say, "O LORD, who can compare with you? You rescue the weak person from the one who is too strong for him and weak and needy people from the one who robs them." NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." GW 11 Malicious people bring charges against me. They ask me things I know nothing about. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. GW 12 I am devastated because they pay me back with evil instead of good. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. GW 13 But when they were sick, I wore sackcloth. I humbled myself with fasting. When my prayer returned unanswered, NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, GW 14 I walked around as if I were mourning for my friend or my brother. I was bent over as if I were mourning for my mother. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. GW 15 Yet, when I stumbled, they rejoiced and gathered together. They gathered together against me. Unknown attackers tore me apart without stopping. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. GW 16 With crude and abusive mockers, they grit their teeth at me. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. GW 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue me from their attacks. Rescue my precious life from the lions. NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. GW 18 I will give you thanks in a large gathering. I will praise you in a crowd [of worshipers]. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. GW 19 Do not let my treacherous enemies gloat over me. Do not let those who hate me for no reason wink [at me]. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. GW 20 They do not talk about peace. Instead, they scheme against the peaceful people in the land. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. GW 21 They open their big mouths and say about me, "Aha! Aha! Our own eyes have seen it." NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." GW 22 You have seen it, O LORD. Do not remain silent. O Lord, do not be so far away from me. NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. GW 23 Wake up, and rise to my defense. Plead my case, O my God and my Lord. NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. GW 24 Judge me by your righteousness, O LORD my God. Do not let them gloat over me NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. GW 25 or think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up." NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." GW 26 Let those who gloat over my downfall be thoroughly put to shame and confused. Let those who promote themselves at my expense be clothed with shame and disgrace. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. GW 27 Let those who are happy when I am declared innocent joyfully sing and rejoice. Let them continually say, "The LORD is great. He is happy when his servant has peace." NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." GW 28 Then my tongue will tell about your righteousness, about your praise all day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
