Psalm 35

NAS 1 Contend, O LORD , with those who contend with me; Fight against those who fight against me. NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. NAS 2 Take hold of buckler and shield And rise up for my help. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. NAS 3 Draw also the spear and the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me; Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." NAS 4 Let those be ashamed and dishonored who seek my life; Let those be turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. NAS 5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, With the angel of the LORD driving them on. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; NAS 6 Let their way be dark and slippery, With the angel of the LORD pursuing them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. NAS 7 For without cause they hid their net for me; Without cause they dug a pit for my soul. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, NAS 8 Let destruction come upon him unawares , And let the net which he hid catch himself; Into that very destruction let him fall. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. NAS 9 And my soul shall rejoice in the LORD ; It shall exult in His salvation. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. NAS 10 All my bones will say, "LORD , who is like You, Who delivers the afflicted from him who is too strong for him, And the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?" NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." NAS 11 Malicious witnesses rise up; They ask me of things that I do not know. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. NAS 12 They repay me evil for good, To the bereavement of my soul. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. NAS 13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, And my prayer kept returning to my bosom. NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, NAS 14 I went about as though it were my friend or brother; I bowed down mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. NAS 15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; The smiters whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. NAS 16 Like godless jesters at a feast, They gnashed at me with their teeth. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. NAS 17 Lord , how long will You look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, My only life from the lions. NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. NAS 18 I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty throng. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. NAS 19 Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; Nor let those who hate me without cause wink maliciously . NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. NAS 20 For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. NAS 21 They opened their mouth wide against me; They said, "Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it!" NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." NAS 22 You have seen it, O LORD , do not keep silent; O Lord , do not be far from me. NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. NAS 23 Stir up Yourself, and awake to my right And to my cause, my God and my Lord . NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. NAS 24 Judge me, O LORD my God, according to Your righteousness, And do not let them rejoice over me. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. NAS 25 Do not let them say in their heart, "Aha, our desire!" Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up!" NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." NAS 26 Let those be ashamed and humiliated altogether who rejoice at my distress; Let those be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves over me. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. NAS 27 Let them shout for joy and rejoice, who favor my vindication; And let them say continually, "The LORD be magnified, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant." NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." NAS 28 And my tongue shall declare Your righteousness And Your praise all day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
