Psalm 35

NRS 1 Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. NRS 2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and rise up to help me! NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. NRS 3 Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers; say to my soul, "I am your salvation." NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." NRS 4 Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life. Let them be turned back and confounded who devise evil against me. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. NRS 5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them on. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; NRS 6 Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. NRS 7 For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, NRS 8 Let ruin come on them unawares. And let the net that they hid ensnare them; let them fall in it—to their ruin. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. NRS 9 Then my soul shall rejoice in the Lord, exulting in his deliverance. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. NRS 10 All my bones shall say, "O Lord, who is like you? You deliver the weak from those too strong for them, the weak and needy from those who despoil them." NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." NRS 11 Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me about things I do not know. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. NRS 12 They repay me evil for good; my soul is forlorn. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. NRS 13 But as for me, when they were sick, I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting. I prayed with head bowed on my bosom, NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, NRS 14 as though I grieved for a friend or a brother; I went about as one who laments for a mother, bowed down and in mourning. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. NRS 15 But at my stumbling they gathered in glee, they gathered together against me; ruffians whom I did not know tore at me without ceasing; NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. NRS 16 they impiously mocked more and more, gnashing at me with their teeth. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. NRS 17 How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their ravages, my life from the lions! NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. NRS 18 Then I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. NRS 19 Do not let my treacherous enemies rejoice over me, or those who hate me without cause wink the eye. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. NRS 20 For they do not speak peace, but they conceive deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. NRS 21 They open wide their mouths against me; they say, "Aha, Aha, our eyes have seen it." NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." NRS 22 You have seen, O Lord; do not be silent! O Lord, do not be far from me! NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. NRS 23 Wake up! Bestir yourself for my defense, for my cause, my God and my Lord! NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. NRS 24 Vindicate me, O Lord, my God, according to your righteousness, and do not let them rejoice over me. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. NRS 25 Do not let them say to themselves, "Aha, we have our heart's desire." Do not let them say, "We have swallowed you up." NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." NRS 26 Let all those who rejoice at my calamity be put to shame and confusion; let those who exalt themselves against me be clothed with shame and dishonor. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. NRS 27 Let those who desire my vindication shout for joy and be glad, and say evermore, "Great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of his servant." NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." NRS 28 Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
