Psalm 35

RHE 1 (34-1) <For David himself.> Judge thou, O Lord, them that wrong me: overthrow them that fight against me. NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. RHE 2 (34-2) Take hold of arms and shield: and rise up to help me. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. RHE 3 (34-3) Bring out the sword, and shut up the way against them that persecute me: say to my soul: I am thy salvation. NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." RHE 4 (34-4) Let them be confounded and ashamed that seek after my soul. Let them be turned back and be confounded that devise evil against me. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. RHE 5 (34-5) Let them become as dust before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord straiten them. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; RHE 6 (34-6) Let their way become dark and slippery; and let the angel of the Lord pursue them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. RHE 7 (34-7) For without cause they have hidden their net for me unto destruction: without cause they have upbraided my soul. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, RHE 8 (34-8) Let the snare which he knoweth not come upon him: and let the net which he hath hidden catch him: and into that very snare let them fall. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. RHE 9 (34-9) But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; and shall be delighted in his salvation. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. RHE 10 (34-10) All my bones shall say: Lord, who is like to thee? Who deliverest the poor from the hand of them that are stronger than he; the needy and the poor from them that strip him. NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." RHE 11 (34-11) Unjust witnesses rising up have asked me things I knew not. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. RHE 12 (34-12) They repaid me evil for good: to the depriving me of my soul. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. RHE 13 (34-13) But as for me, when they were troublesome to me, I was clothed with haircloth. I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer shall be turned into my bosom. NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, RHE 14 (34-14) As a neighbour and as an own brother, so did I please: as one mourning and sorrowful so was I humbled. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. RHE 15 (34-15) But they rejoiced against me, and came together: scourges were gathered together upon me, and I knew not. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. RHE 16 (34-16) They were separated, and repented not: they tempted me, they scoffed at me with scorn: they gnashed upon me with their teeth. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. RHE 17 (34-17) Lord, when wilt thou look upon me? rescue thou my soul from their malice: my only one from the lions. NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. RHE 18 (34-18) I will give thanks to thee in a great church; I will praise thee in a strong people. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. RHE 19 (34-19) Let not them that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: who have hated me without cause, and wink with the eyes. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. RHE 20 (34-20) For they spoke indeed peaceably to me; and speaking in the anger of the earth they devised guile. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. RHE 21 (34-21) And they opened their mouth wide against me; they said: Well done, well done, our eyes have seen it. NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." RHE 22 (34-22) Thou hast seen, O Lord, be not thou silent: O Lord, depart not from me. NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. RHE 23 (34-23) Arise, and be attentive to my judgment: to my cause, my God, and my Lord. NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. RHE 24 (34-24) Judge me, O Lord my God according to thy justice, and let them not rejoice over me. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. RHE 25 (34-25) Let them not say in their hearts: It is well, it is well, to our mind: neither let them say: We have swallowed him up. NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." RHE 26 (34-26) Let them blush: and be ashamed to gether, who rejoice at my evils. Let them be clothed with confusion and shame, who speak great things against me. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. RHE 27 (34-27) Let them rejoice and be glad, who are well pleased with my justice, and let them say always: The Lord be magnified, who delights in the peace of his servant. NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." RHE 28 (34-28) And my tongue shall meditate thy justice, thy praise all the day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
