Psalm 35

TMB 1 <<A Psalm of David.>> Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me; fight against them that fight against me. NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. TMB 2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. TMB 3 Draw out also the spear, and block the way against them that persecute me. Say unto my soul, "I am thy salvation." NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." TMB 4 Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul; let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. TMB 5 Let them be as chaff before the wind, and let the angel of the LORD chase them. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; TMB 6 Let their way be dark and slippery, and let the angel of the LORD persecute them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. TMB 7 For without cause they have hid their net for me in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, TMB 8 Let destruction come upon him unawares; and let the net which he hath hidden catch himself; into that very destruction let him fall. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. TMB 9 Then my soul shall be joyful in the LORD; it shall rejoice in His salvation. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. TMB 10 All my bones shall say, "LORD, who is like unto Thee, who deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and needy from him that would plunder him?" NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." TMB 11 False witnesses rose up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. TMB 12 They rewarded me evil for good, to the grieving of my soul. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. TMB 13 But as for me, when they were sick my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, and my prayer returned unto mine own bosom. NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, TMB 14 I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother; I bowed down in heaviness, as one that mourneth for his mother. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. TMB 15 But in mine adversity they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they tore at me and ceased not. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. TMB 16 With hypocritical mockers at feasts they gnashed their teeth against me. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. TMB 17 Lord, how long wilt Thou look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions, my precious soul from the lions. NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. TMB 18 I will give Thee thanks in the great congregation; I will praise Thee among many people. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. TMB 19 Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. TMB 20 For they speak not peace, but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. TMB 21 Yea, they opened their mouths wide against me and said, "Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it." NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." TMB 22 This Thou hast seen, O LORD; keep not silence; O Lord, be not far from me. NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. TMB 23 Stir up Thyself, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord. NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. TMB 24 Judge me, O LORD my God, according to Thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. TMB 25 Let them not say in their hearts, "Ah, so would we have it!" Let them not say, "We have swallowed him up." NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." TMB 26 Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at my hurt; let them be clothed with shame and dishonor that magnify themselves against me. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. TMB 27 Let them shout for joy and be glad that favor my righteous cause; yea, let them say continually, "Let the LORD be magnified who hath pleasure in the prosperity of His servant." NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." TMB 28 And my tongue shall speak of Thy righteousness and of Thy praise all the day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
