Psalm 39

NKJV 1 To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, "I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me." NIV 1 I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence." NKJV 2 I was mute with silence, I held my peace even from good; And my sorrow was stirred up. NIV 2 But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. NKJV 3 My heart was hot within me; While I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: NIV 3 My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: NKJV 4 "Lord, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. NIV 4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. NKJV 5 Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah NIV 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. "Selah" NKJV 6 Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them. NIV 6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. NKJV 7 "And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. NIV 7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. NKJV 8 Deliver me from all my transgressions; Do not make me the reproach of the foolish. NIV 8 Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools. NKJV 9 I was mute, I did not open my mouth, Because it was You who did it. NIV 9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. NKJV 10 Remove Your plague from me; I am consumed by the blow of Your hand. NIV 10 Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand. NKJV 11 When with rebukes You correct man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away like a moth; Surely every man is vapor. Selah NIV 11 You rebuke and discipline men for their sin; you consume their wealth like a moth-- each man is but a breath. "Selah" NKJV 12 "Hear my prayer, O Lord, And give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner, as all my fathers were. NIV 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were. NKJV 13 Remove Your gaze from me, that I may regain strength, Before I go away and am no more." NIV 13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no more."
