Psalm 40

CSB 1 I waited patiently for the Lord, and He turned to me and heard my cry for help. NIV 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. CSB 2 He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure. NIV 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. CSB 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. NIV 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. CSB 4 How happy is the man who has put his trust in the Lord and has not turned to the proud or to those who run after lies! NIV 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. CSB 5 Lord my God, You have done many things- Your wonderful works and Your plans for us; none can compare with You. If I were to report and speak [of them], they are more than can be told. NIV 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. CSB 6 You do not delight in sacrifice and offering; You open my ears to listen. You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering. NIV 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. CSB 7 Then I said, "See, I have come; it is written about me in the volume of the scroll. NIV 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. CSB 8 I delight to do Your will, my God; Your instruction resides within me." NIV 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." CSB 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; see, I do not keep my mouth closed -as You know, Lord. NIV 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. CSB 10 I did not hide Your righteousness in my heart; I spoke about Your faithfulness and salvation; I did not conceal Your constant love and truth from the great assembly. NIV 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. CSB 11 Lord, do not withhold Your compassion from me; Your constant love and truth will always guard me. NIV 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. CSB 12 For troubles without number have surrounded me; my sins have overtaken me; I am unable to see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my courage leaves me. NIV 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. CSB 13 Lord, be pleased to deliver me; hurry to help me, Lord. NIV 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. CSB 14 Let those who seek to take my life be disgraced and confounded. Let those who wish me harm be driven back and humiliated. NIV 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. CSB 15 Let those who say to me, "Aha, aha!" be horrified because of their shame. NIV 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. CSB 16 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; let those who love Your salvation continually say, "The Lord is great!" NIV 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!" CSB 17 I am afflicted and needy; the Lord thinks of me. You are my help and my deliverer; my God, do not delay. NIV 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
