Psalm 40

DBY 1 {To the chief Musician. Of David. A Psalm.} I waited patiently for Jehovah; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. NIV 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. DBY 2 And he brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock; he hath established my goings: NIV 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. DBY 3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, praise unto our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall confide in Jehovah. NIV 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. DBY 4 Blessed is the man that hath made Jehovah his confidence, and turneth not to the proud, and to such as turn aside to lies. NIV 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. DBY 5 Thou, O Jehovah my God, hast multiplied thy marvellous works, and thy thoughts toward us: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee; would I declare and speak [them], they are more than can be numbered. NIV 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. DBY 6 Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire: ears hast thou prepared me. Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not demanded; NIV 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. DBY 7 Then said I, Behold, I come, in the volume of the book it is written of me -- NIV 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. DBY 8 To do thy good pleasure, my God, is my delight, and thy law is within my heart. NIV 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." DBY 9 I have published righteousness in the great congregation: behold, I have not withheld my lips, Jehovah, *thou* knowest. NIV 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. DBY 10 I have not hidden thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation. NIV 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. DBY 11 Withhold not thou, Jehovah, thy tender mercies from me; let thy loving-kindness and thy truth continually preserve me. NIV 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. DBY 12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head: and my heart hath failed me. NIV 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. DBY 13 Be pleased, O Jehovah, to deliver me; Jehovah, make haste to my help. NIV 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. DBY 14 Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be turned backward and confounded that take pleasure in mine adversity; NIV 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. DBY 15 Let them be desolate, because of their shame, that say unto me, Aha! Aha! NIV 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. DBY 16 Let all those that seek thee be glad and rejoice in thee; let such as love thy salvation say continually, Jehovah be magnified! NIV 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!" DBY 17 But I am afflicted and needy: the Lord thinketh upon me. Thou art my help and my deliverer: my God, make no delay. NIV 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
