Psalm 40

LEB 1 I waited patiently for Yahweh, And he inclined to me and heard my cry for help. NIV 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. LEB 2 And [so] he brought me up from [the] roaring pit, from the miry clay. And he put my feet upon a rock; he made my steps steady. NIV 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. LEB 3 Then he put a new song in my mouth, a praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and will trust Yahweh. NIV 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. LEB 4 Blessed [is] the man who makes Yahweh his trust and does not turn to [the] proud and [to those who] fall away [to] a lie. NIV 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. LEB 5 Many things, O Yahweh my God, you have done-- your wonderful deeds and your thoughts toward us. There is none to compare with you. If I [tried to] proclaim and tell [of them], they would be too numerous to count. NIV 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. LEB 6 A sacrifice and offering you do not desire. {My ears you have opened}. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not demanded. NIV 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. LEB 7 Then I said, "Look, I come. In [the] scroll of [the] book it is written concerning me: NIV 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. LEB 8 'I delight to do your will, O my God, and your law [is] {deep within me}.'" NIV 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." LEB 9 I have brought good tidings [of] righteousness in the great congregation. Look, I have not shut my lips. O Yahweh, {you surely know that}. NIV 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. LEB 10 Your righteousness I have not hidden in the midst of my heart. I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your loyal love or your faithfulness from [the] great congregation. NIV 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. LEB 11 As for you, O Yahweh, do not withhold your mercies from me. Let your loyal love and your faithfulness continually preserve me. NIV 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. LEB 12 For evils without number have encompassed me. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me. NIV 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. LEB 13 Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me. O Yahweh, hurry to help me. NIV 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. LEB 14 Let them be shamed and abashed altogether who seek to take away my life. Let them be repulsed and humiliated [who] desire my harm. NIV 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. LEB 15 Let them be appalled because of their shame, those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" NIV 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. LEB 16 Let them rejoice and be glad in you, all those who seek you. Let them say continually, "Yahweh is great!" --those who love your salvation. NIV 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!" LEB 17 But I [am] poor and needy. Let my Lord consider me. You [are] my help and my deliverer. O my God, do not delay. NIV 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
