Psalm 44

NRS 1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our ancestors have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: NIV 1 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago. NRS 2 you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; NIV 2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish. NRS 3 for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm give them victory; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your countenance, for you delighted in them. NIV 3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them. NRS 4 You are my King and my God; you command victories for Jacob. NIV 4 You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. NRS 5 Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down our assailants. NIV 5 Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. NRS 6 For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. NIV 6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; NRS 7 But you have saved us from our foes, and have put to confusion those who hate us. NIV 7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. NRS 8 In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. (Selah) NIV 8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. "Selah" NRS 9 Yet you have rejected us and abased us, and have not gone out with our armies. NIV 9 But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies. NRS 10 You made us turn back from the foe, and our enemies have gotten spoil. NIV 10 You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us. NRS 11 You have made us like sheep for slaughter, and have scattered us among the nations. NIV 11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations. NRS 12 You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. NIV 12 You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale. NRS 13 You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. NIV 13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us. NRS 14 You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. NIV 14 You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. NRS 15 All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face NIV 15 My disgrace is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame NRS 16 at the words of the taunters and revilers, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. NIV 16 at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge. NRS 17 All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, or been false to your covenant. NIV 17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant. NRS 18 Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way, NIV 18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path. NRS 19 yet you have broken us in the haunt of jackals, and covered us with deep darkness. NIV 19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals and covered us over with deep darkness. NRS 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god, NIV 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, NRS 21 would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. NIV 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart? NRS 22 Because of you we are being killed all day long, and accounted as sheep for the slaughter. NIV 22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. NRS 23 Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not cast us off forever! NIV 23 Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself ! Do not reject us forever. NRS 24 Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? NIV 24 Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression? NRS 25 For we sink down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. NIV 25 We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. NRS 26 Rise up, come to our help. Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love. NIV 26 Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.
