Psalm 48

NLT 1 A psalm of the descendants of Korah. A song. How great is the LORD, and how much we should praise him in the city of our God, which is on his holy mountain! NIV 1 Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain. NLT 2 It is magnificent in elevation -- the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King! NIV 2 It is beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth. Like the utmost heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King. NLT 3 God himself is in Jerusalem's towers. He reveals himself as her defender. NIV 3 God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress. NLT 4 The kings of the earth joined forces and advanced against the city. NIV 4 When the kings joined forces, when they advanced together, NLT 5 But when they saw it, they were stunned; they were terrified and ran away. NIV 5 they saw [her] and were astounded; they fled in terror. NLT 6 They were gripped with terror, like a woman writhing in the pain of childbirth NIV 6 Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor. NLT 7 or like the mighty ships of Tarshish being shattered by a powerful east wind. NIV 7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish shattered by an east wind. NLT 8 We had heard of the city's glory, but now we have seen it ourselves -- the city of the LORD Almighty. It is the city of our God; he will make it safe forever. Interlude NIV 8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD Almighty, in the city of our God: God makes her secure forever. "Selah" NLT 9 O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple. NIV 9 Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love. NLT 10 As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the earth. Your strong right hand is filled with victory. NIV 10 Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. NLT 11 Let the people on Mount Zion rejoice. Let the towns of Judah be glad, for your judgments are just. NIV 11 Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments. NLT 12 Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers. NIV 12 Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, NLT 13 Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations. NIV 13 consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. NLT 14 For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will be our guide until we die. NIV 14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.
