Psalm 49:10-20

NLT 10 Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind. NIV 10 For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others. NLT 11 The grave is their eternal home, where they will stay forever. They may name their estates after themselves, NIV 11 Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves. NLT 12 but their fame will not last. They will die, just like animals. NIV 12 But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish. NLT 13 This is the fate of fools, though they are remembered as being wise. Interlude NIV 13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. "Selah" NLT 14 Like sheep, they are led to the grave, where death will be their shepherd. In the morning the godly will rule over them. Their bodies will rot in the grave, far from their grand estates. NIV 14 Like sheep they are destined for the grave, and death will feed on them. The upright will rule over them in the morning; their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions. NLT 15 But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the power of the grave. Interlude NIV 15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. "Selah" NLT 16 So don’t be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid. NIV 16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases; NLT 17 For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave. NIV 17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. NLT 18 In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success. NIV 18 Though while he lived he counted himself blessed-- and men praise you when you prosper-- NLT 19 But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day. NIV 19 he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light [of life]. NLT 20 People who boast of their wealth don’t understand; they will die, just like animals. NIV 20 A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
