Psalm 51

NLT 1 For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time Nathan the prophet came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. NIV 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. NLT 2 Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. NIV 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. NLT 3 For I recognize my shameful deeds -- they haunt me day and night. NIV 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. NLT 4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. NIV 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. NLT 5 For I was born a sinner -- yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. NIV 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. NLT 6 But you desire honesty from the heart, so you can teach me to be wise in my inmost being. NIV 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. NLT 7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. NIV 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. NLT 8 Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me -- now let me rejoice. NIV 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. NLT 9 Don't keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. NIV 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. NLT 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. NIV 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. NLT 11 Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me. NIV 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. NLT 12 Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. NIV 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. NLT 13 Then I will teach your ways to sinners, and they will return to you. NIV 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. NLT 14 Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. NIV 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. NLT 15 Unseal my lips, O Lord, that I may praise you. NIV 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. NLT 16 You would not be pleased with sacrifices, or I would bring them. If I brought you a burnt offering, you would not accept it. NIV 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. NLT 17 The sacrifice you want is a broken spirit. A broken and repentant heart, O God, you will not despise. NIV 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. NLT 18 Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. NIV 18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem. NLT 19 Then you will be pleased with worthy sacrifices and with our whole burnt offerings; and bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar. NIV 19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings to delight you; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
