Psalm 72

RSV 1 A Psalm of Solomon. Give the king thy justice, O God, and thy righteousness to the royal son! NIV 1 Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. RSV 2 May he judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with justice! NIV 2 He will judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. RSV 3 Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! NIV 3 The mountains will bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. RSV 4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor! NIV 4 He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; he will crush the oppressor. RSV 5 May he live while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations! NIV 5 He will endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. RSV 6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth! NIV 6 He will be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. RSV 7 In his days may righteousness flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more! NIV 7 In his days the righteous will flourish; prosperity will abound till the moon is no more. RSV 8 May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth! NIV 8 He will rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. RSV 9 May his foes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust! NIV 9 The desert tribes will bow before him and his enemies will lick the dust. RSV 10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles render him tribute, may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts! NIV 10 The kings of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him; the kings of Sheba and Seba will present him gifts. RSV 11 May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him! NIV 11 All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him. RSV 12 For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. NIV 12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. RSV 13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. NIV 13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. RSV 14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life; and precious is their blood in his sight. NIV 14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight. RSV 15 Long may he live, may gold of Sheba be given to him! May prayer be made for him continually, and blessings invoked for him all the day! NIV 15 Long may he live! May gold from Sheba be given him. May people ever pray for him and bless him all day long. RSV 16 May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may men blossom forth from the cities like the grass of the field! NIV 16 Let grain abound throughout the land; on the tops of the hills may it sway. Let its fruit flourish like Lebanon; let it thrive like the grass of the field. RSV 17 May his name endure for ever, his fame continue as long as the sun! May men bless themselves by him, all nations call him blessed! NIV 17 May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. All nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed. RSV 18 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. NIV 18 Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. RSV 19 Blessed be his glorious name for ever; may his glory fill the whole earth! Amen and Amen! NIV 19 Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen. RSV 20 The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended. NIV 20 This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.
