Psalm 88

RHE 1 (87-1) <A canticle of a psalm for the sons of Core: unto the end, for Maheleth, to answer understanding of Eman the Ezrahite.> (87-2) O Lord, the God of my salvation: I have cried in the day, and in the night before thee. NIV 1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you. RHE 2 (87-3) Let my prayer come in before thee: incline thy ear to my petition. NIV 2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry. RHE 3 (87-4) For my soul is filled with evils: and my life hath drawn nigh to hell. NIV 3 For my soul is full of trouble and my life draws near the grave. RHE 4 (87-5) I am counted among them that go down to the pit: I am become as a man without help, NIV 4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like a man without strength. RHE 5 (87-6) Free among the dead. Like the slain sleeping in the sepulchres, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand. NIV 5 I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care. RHE 6 (87-7) They have laid me in the lower pit: in the dark places, and in the shadow of death. NIV 6 You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. RHE 7 (87-8) Thy wrath is strong over me: and all thy waves thou hast brought in upon me. NIV 7 Your wrath lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. "Selah" RHE 8 (87-9) Thou hast put away my acquaintance far from me: they have set me an abomination to themselves. I was delivered up, and came not forth: NIV 8 You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape; RHE 9 (87-10) My eyes languished through poverty. All the day I cried to thee, O Lord: I stretched out my hands to thee. NIV 9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you. RHE 10 (87-11) Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? or shall physicians raise to life, and give praise to thee? NIV 10 Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you? "Selah" RHE 11 (87-12) Shall any one in the sepulchre declare thy mercy: and thy truth in destruction? NIV 11 Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction ? RHE 12 (87-13) Shall thy wonders be known in the dark; and thy justice in the land of forgetfulness? NIV 12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion? RHE 13 (87-14) But I, O Lord, have cried to thee: and in the morning my prayer shall prevent thee. NIV 13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you. RHE 14 (87-15) Lord, why castest thou off my prayer: why turnest thou away thy face from me? NIV 14 Why, O LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me? RHE 15 (87-16) I am poor, and in labours from my youth: and being exalted have been humbled and troubled. NIV 15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair. RHE 16 (87-17) Thy wrath hath come upon me: and thy terrors have troubled me. NIV 16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me. RHE 17 (87-18) They have come round about me like water all the day: they have compassed me about together. NIV 17 All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me. RHE 18 (87-19) Friend and neighbour thou hast put far from me: and my acquaintance, because of misery. NIV 18 You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.
