Revelation 9

CSB 1 The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth. The key to the shaft of the abyss was given to him. NIV 1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. CSB 2 He opened the shaft of the abyss, and smoke came up out of the shaft like smoke from a great furnace so that the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft. NIV 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. CSB 3 Then out of the smoke locusts came to the earth, and power was given to them like the power that scorpions have on the earth. NIV 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. CSB 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green plant, or any tree, but only people who do not have God's seal on their foreheads. NIV 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. CSB 5 They were not permitted to kill them, but were to torment [them] for five months; their torment is like the torment caused by a scorpion when it strikes a man. NIV 5 They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man. CSB 6 In those days people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them. NIV 6 During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them. CSB 7 The appearance of the locusts was like horses equipped for battle. On their heads were something like gold crowns; their faces were like men's faces; NIV 7 The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces. CSB 8 they had hair like women's hair; their teeth were like lions' teeth; NIV 8 Their hair was like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. CSB 9 they had chests like iron breastplates; the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses rushing into battle; NIV 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. CSB 10 and they had tails with stingers, like scorpions, so that with their tails they had the power to harm people for five months. NIV 10 They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. CSB 11 They had as their king the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he has the name Apollyon. NIV 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. CSB 12 The first woe has passed. There are still two more woes to come after this. NIV 12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come. CSB 13 The sixth angel blew his trumpet. From the four horns of the gold altar that is before God, I heard a voice NIV 13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that is before God. CSB 14 say to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels bound at the great river Euphrates." NIV 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates." CSB 15 So the four angels who were prepared for the hour, day, month, and year were released to kill a third of the human race. NIV 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind. CSB 16 The number of mounted troops was 200 million; I heard their number. NIV 16 The number of the mounted troops was two hundred million. I heard their number. CSB 17 This is how I saw the horses in my vision: The horsemen had breastplates that were fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow. The heads of the horses were like lions' heads, and from their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur. NIV 17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulfur. CSB 18 A third of the human race was killed by these three plagues-by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur that came from their mouths. NIV 18 A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur that came out of their mouths. CSB 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, because their tails, like snakes, have heads, and they inflict injury with them. NIV 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury. CSB 20 The rest of the people, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands to stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which are not able to see, hear, or walk. NIV 20 The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk. CSB 21 And they did not repent of their murders, their sorceries, their sexual immorality, or their thefts. NIV 21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.
