ESV 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, NIV 5 Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. ESV 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, NIV 6 And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. ESV 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. ESV 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. NIV 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. ESV 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you NIV 9 God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you ESV 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. NIV 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you. ESV 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you-- NIV 11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong-- ESV 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. NIV 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. ESV 13 I want you to know, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. NIV 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. ESV 14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. NIV 14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. ESV 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. NIV 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome. ESV 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. NIV 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. ESV 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith." NIV 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." ESV 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. NIV 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, ESV 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. NIV 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. ESV 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. NIV 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ESV 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. NIV 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. ESV 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, NIV 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools ESV 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. NIV 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. ESV 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, NIV 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. ESV 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. NIV 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. ESV 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; NIV 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. ESV 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. NIV 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. ESV 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. NIV 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. ESV 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, NIV 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, ESV 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, NIV 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; ESV 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. NIV 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. ESV 32 Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. NIV 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
