Romans 2

RHE 1 Wherefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest. For wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself. For thou dost the same things which thou judgest. NIV 1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. RHE 2 For we know that the judgment of God is, according to truth, against them that do such things. NIV 2 Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. RHE 3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them who do such things and dost the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? NIV 3 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment? RHE 4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and patience and longsuffering? Knowest thou not that the benignity of God leadeth thee to penance? NIV 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance? RHE 5 But according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, thou treasurest up to thyself wrath, against the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God: NIV 5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. RHE 6 Who will render to every man according to his works. NIV 6 God "will give to each person according to what he has done." RHE 7 To them indeed who, according to patience in good work, seek glory and honour and incorruption, eternal life: NIV 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. RHE 8 But to them that are contentious and who obey not the truth but give credit to iniquity, wrath and indignation. NIV 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. RHE 9 Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that worketh evil: of the Jew first, and also of the Greek. NIV 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; RHE 10 But glory and honour and peace to every one that worketh good: to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. NIV 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. RHE 11 For there is no respect of persons with God. NIV 11 For God does not show favoritism. RHE 12 For whosoever have sinned without the law shall perish without the law: and whosoever have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law. NIV 12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. RHE 13 For not the hearers of the law are just before God: but the doers of the law shall be justified. NIV 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. RHE 14 For when the Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature those things that are of the law; these, having not the law, are a law to themselves. NIV 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, RHE 15 Who shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness to them: and their thoughts between themselves accusing or also defending one another, NIV 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) RHE 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. NIV 16 This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares. RHE 17 But if thou art called a Jew and restest in the law and makest thy boast of God, NIV 17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God; RHE 18 And knowest his will and approvest the more profitable things, being instructed by the law: NIV 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; RHE 19 Art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them that are in darkness, NIV 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, RHE 20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, having the form of knowledge and of truth in the law. NIV 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth-- RHE 21 Thou therefore, that teachest another, teachest not thyself: thou, that preachest that men should not steal, stealest. NIV 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself ? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? RHE 22 Thou, that sayest men should not commit adultery, committest adultery: thou, that abhorrest idols, committest sacrilege: NIV 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? RHE 23 Thou, that makest thy boast of the law, by transgression of the law dishonourest God. NIV 23 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? RHE 24 (For the name of God through you is blasphemed among the Gentiles, as it is written.) NIV 24 As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you." RHE 25 Circumcision profiteth indeed, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a transgressor of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. NIV 25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. RHE 26 If then, the uncircumcised keep the justices of the law, shall not this uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? NIV 26 If those who are not circumcised keep the law's requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? RHE 27 And shall not that which by nature is uncircumcision, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision art a transgressor of the law? NIV 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. RHE 28 For it is not he is a Jew, who is so outwardly: nor is that circumcision which is outwardly in the flesh. NIV 28 A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. RHE 29 But he is a Jew that is one inwardly and the circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter: whose praise is not of men, but of God. NIV 29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.
