Romans 3

LEB 1 Therefore, what [is] the advantage of the Jew, or what [is] the use of circumcision? NIV 1 What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? LEB 2 Much in every way. For first, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. NIV 2 Much in every way! First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of God. LEB 3 {What is the result} if some refused to believe? Their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, [will it]? NIV 3 What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God's faithfulness? LEB 4 May it never be! But let God be true but every human being a liar, just as it is written, "In order that you may be justified in your words, and may prevail when you are<note: *Or, if the form is understood as middle voice, "when you yourself judge"> judged."<note: A quotation from Ps 51:4> NIV 4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written: "So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge." LEB 5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? God, who inflicts wrath, [is] not unjust, [is he]? (I am speaking according to a human perspective.) NIV 5 But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) LEB 6 May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? NIV 6 Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? LEB 7 But if by my lying, the truth of God abounded to his glory, why am I also still condemned as a sinner? NIV 7 Someone might argue, "If my falsehood enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?" LEB 8 And [why] not (as we are slandered, and as some affirm that we say), "Let us do evil, in order that good may come [of it]? Their condemnation is just! NIV 8 Why not say--as we are being slanderously reported as saying and as some claim that we say--"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is deserved. LEB 9 What then? Do we have an advantage? Not at all. For we have already charged both Jews and Greeks are all under sin, NIV 9 What shall we conclude then? Are we any better ? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. LEB 10 just as it is written, "[There] is no one righteous, not even one; NIV 10 As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; LEB 11 [there] is no one who understands; [there] is no one who seeks God. NIV 11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. LEB 12 All have turned aside together; they have become worthless; [There] is no one who practices kindness; [there] is not even one. NIV 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." LEB 13 Their throat [is] an opened grave; they deceive with their tongues; the venom of asps [is] under their lips, NIV 13 "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit." "The poison of vipers is on their lips." LEB 14 whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. NIV 14 "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness." LEB 15 Their feet [are] swift to shed blood; NIV 15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood; LEB 16 destruction and distress [are] in their paths, NIV 16 ruin and misery mark their ways, LEB 17 and they have not known the way of peace. NIV 17 and the way of peace they do not know." LEB 18 The fear of God is not before their eyes." NIV 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes." LEB 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those under the law, in order that every mouth may be closed and the whole world may become accountable to God. NIV 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. LEB 20 For by the works of the law {no person will be declared righteous} before him, for through the law [comes] knowledge of sin. NIV 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. LEB 21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified about by the law and the prophets-- NIV 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. LEB 22 that is, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. For [there] is no distinction, NIV 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, LEB 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, NIV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, LEB 24 being justified as a gift by his grace, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, NIV 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. LEB 25 whom God made publicly available as the mercy seat through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness, because of the passing over of previously committed sins, NIV 25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- LEB 26 in the forbearance of God, for the demonstration of his righteousness in the present time, so that he should be just and the one who justifies the [person] by faith in Jesus. NIV 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. LEB 27 Therefore, where [is] boasting? It has been excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. NIV 27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. LEB 28 For we consider a person to be justified by faith apart from the works of the law. NIV 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. LEB 29 Or [is God] the God of the Jews only? [Is he] not also [the God] of the Gentiles? Yes, also of the Gentiles, NIV 29 Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, LEB 30 since God [is] one, who will justify {those who are circumcised} by faith and {those who are uncircumcised} through faith. NIV 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. LEB 31 Therefore, do we nullify the law through faith? May it never be! But we uphold the law. NIV 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.
