Romans 4

BBE 1 What, then, may we say that Abraham, our father after the flesh, has got? NIV 1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter? BBE 2 For if Abraham got righteousness by works, he has reason for pride; but not before God. NIV 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about--but not before God. BBE 3 But what does it say in the holy Writings? And Abraham had faith in God, and it was put to his account as righteousness. NIV 3 What does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." BBE 4 Now, the reward is credited to him who does works, not as of grace but as a debt. NIV 4 Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. BBE 5 But to him who without working has faith in him who gives righteousness to the evil-doer, his faith is put to his account as righteousness. NIV 5 However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. BBE 6 As David says that there is a blessing on the man to whose account God puts righteousness without works, saying, NIV 6 David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: BBE 7 Happy are those who have forgiveness for their wrongdoing, and whose sins are covered. NIV 7 "Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. BBE 8 Happy is the man against whom no sin is recorded by the Lord. NIV 8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him." BBE 9 Is this blessing, then, for the circumcision only, or in the same way for those who have not circumcision? for we say that the faith of Abraham was put to his account as righteousness. NIV 9 Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham's faith was credited to him as righteousness. BBE 10 How, then, was it judged? when he had circumcision, or when he had it not? Not when he had it, but when he did not have it: NIV 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! BBE 11 And he was given the sign of circumcision as a witness of the faith which he had before he underwent circumcision: so that he might be the father of all those who have faith, though they have not circumcision, and so that righteousness might be put to their account; NIV 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. BBE 12 And the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who keep to the way of that faith which our father Abraham had before he underwent circumcision. NIV 12 And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised. BBE 13 For God's word, that the earth would be his heritage, was given to Abraham, not through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. NIV 13 It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. BBE 14 For if they who are of the law are the people who get the heritage, then faith is made of no use, and the word of God has no power; NIV 14 For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless, BBE 15 For the outcome of the law is wrath; but where there is no law it will not be broken. NIV 15 because law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. BBE 16 For this reason it is of faith, so that it may be through grace; and so that the word of God may be certain to all the seed; not only to that which is of the law, but to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, NIV 16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring--not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. BBE 17 (As it is said in the holy Writings, I have made you a father of a number of nations) before him in whom he had faith, that is, God, who gives life to the dead, and to whom the things which are not are as if they were. NIV 17 As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations." He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed--the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were. BBE 18 Who without reason for hope, in faith went on hoping, so that he became the father of a number of nations, as it had been said, So will your seed be. NIV 18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." BBE 19 And not being feeble in faith though his body seemed to him little better than dead (he being about a hundred years old) and Sarah was no longer able to have children: NIV 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead. BBE 20 Still, he did not give up faith in the undertaking of God, but was made strong by faith, giving glory to God, NIV 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, BBE 21 And being certain that God was able to keep his word. NIV 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. BBE 22 For which reason it was put to his account as righteousness. NIV 22 This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." BBE 23 Now, it was not because of him only that this was said, NIV 23 The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone, BBE 24 But for us in addition, to whose account it will be put, if we have faith in him who made Jesus our Lord come back again from the dead, NIV 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. BBE 25 Who was put to death for our evil-doing, and came to life again so that we might have righteousness. NIV 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
