1 Canción de las gradas: para Salomón. Si el SEÑOR no edificare la casa, en vano trabajan los que la edifican; si el SEÑOR no guardare la ciudad, en vano vela la guardia.

Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.
2 Por demás os <I>es</I> el madrugar a levantaros, el veniros tarde a reposar, el comer pan de dolores; pues que a su amado dará <I>Dios</I> el sueño.

In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.
3 He aquí, heredad del SEÑOR <I>son</I> los hijos; cosa de estima el fruto del vientre.

Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.
4 Como saetas en mano del valiente, así <I>son</I> los hijos mancebos.

Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.
5 Dichoso el varón que llenó su aljaba de ellos; no será avergonzado cuando hablare con los enemigos en la puerta.

Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.
