Zechariah 7:8-14

RSV 8 And the word of the LORD came to Zechari'ah, saying, NIV 8 And the word of the LORD came again to Zechariah: RSV 9 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy each to his brother, NIV 9 "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. RSV 10 do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart." NIV 10 Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.' RSV 11 But they refused to hearken, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears that they might not hear. NIV 11 "But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and stopped up their ears. RSV 12 They made their hearts like adamant lest they should hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts. NIV 12 They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the LORD Almighty was very angry. RSV 13 "As I called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear," says the LORD of hosts, NIV 13 " 'When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,' says the LORD Almighty. RSV 14 "and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land they left was desolate, so that no one went to and fro, and the pleasant land was made desolate." NIV 14 'I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land was left so desolate behind them that no one could come or go. This is how they made the pleasant land desolate.' "
