And as a greatdissension was developing, the commander was afraidPaul would be torn to pieces by them and ordered the troops to godown and take him away from them by force, and bring him into 1the barracks.

But on 2the night immediately following, the Lordstood at his side and said, "3Takecourage; for 4as you have 5solemnlywitnessed to My cause* at Jerusalem, so you mustwitness at Romealso."
A Conspiracy to Kill Paul
12 When it was day, 6the Jewsformed a conspiracy and 7boundthemselvesunder an oath, saying that they would neithereatnordrinkuntil they had killedPaul.

They came to the chiefpriests and the elders and said, "We have 8boundourselvesunder a solemnoath to tastenothinguntil we have killedPaul

"Nowtherefore, you and 9the Councilnotify the commander to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case* by a morethoroughinvestigation; and we for our part are ready to slay him before he comesnear the place."

But the son of Paul'ssisterheard of their ambush, and he came and entered10the barracks and toldPaul.

Paulcalledone of the centurions to him and said, "Leadthisyoungman to the commander, for he hassomething to report to him."
18
So he took him and led him to the commander and said, "Paul11the prisonercalled me to him and asked me to leadthisyoungman to you since he hassomething to tell you."

The commandertook him by the hand and steppingaside, began to inquire of him privately*, "What is it that you have to report to me?

And he said, "12The Jews have agreed to ask you to bringPauldowntomorrow to 13the Council, as though they were going to inquiresomewhatmorethoroughlyabout him.
