Because the harbor was not suitable for wintering, the majorityreached a decision to put out to sea from there, ifsomehow they couldreachPhoenix, a harbor of 3Crete, facingsouthwest and northwest, and spend the winter there.

When a moderatesouthwindcame up, supposing that they had attained their purpose, they weighedanchor and began 4sailingalong5Crete, close inshore.
Shipwreck
14 But before*verylong there 6rusheddown from the land a violentwind, calledEuraquilo;

and when the ship was caught in it and could not face the wind, we gaveway to it and let ourselves be driven along.

Runningunder the shelter of a smallislandcalledClauda, we were scarcelyable to get the ship's boatundercontrol.

After they had hoisted it up, they usedsupportingcables in undergirding the ship; and fearing that they might 7runaground on the shallows of Syrtis, they letdown the seaanchor and in thisway let themselves be driven along.

The next day as we were being violentlystorm-tossed, they began to 8jettison the cargo;

and on the third day they threw the ship'stackle overboard with their ownhands.

Since neithersunnorstarsappeared for manydays, and nosmallstorm was assailing us, from then on allhope of our being saved was gradually abandoned.

When they had gone a longtimewithoutfood, thenPaulstood up in their midst and said, "9Men, you ought to have followed my advice and not to have setsail from 10Crete and incurredthis11damage and loss.

"Yet now I urge you to 12keep up your courage, for there will be noloss of lifeamong you, but only of the ship.

"For this very night13an angel of the God to whom I belong and 14whom I serve15stoodbefore me,

saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; 16you muststandbeforeCaesar; and behold, God has granted you 17allthose who are sailing with you.'

"Therefore, 18keep up your courage, men, for I believeGod that it will turn out exactly** as I have been told.
