1Now a certainman was sick, Lazarus of 1Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister2Martha.
2
It was the Mary who 3anointed4the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whosebrotherLazarus was sick.
3
So the sisterssent word to Him, saying, "5Lord, behold, 6he whom You love is sick."
4
But when Jesusheard this, He said, "Thissickness is not to end in death, but for 7the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."
5
NowJesusloved8Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6
Sowhen He heard that he was sick, He thenstayedtwodays longer in the placewhere He was.
7
Thenafterthis He said to the disciples, "9Let us go to Judeaagain."
8
The disciplessaid to Him, "10Rabbi, the Jews were justnowseeking11to stone You, and are You goingthereagain?"
9
Jesusanswered, "12Are there not twelvehours in the day? Ifanyonewalks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of thisworld.
10
"But ifanyonewalks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
11
This He said, and after that He said to them, "Our 13friendLazarus14has fallenasleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep."
12
The disciplesthensaid to Him, "Lord, if he has fallenasleep, he will recover."
13
Now15Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literalsleep.
14
SoJesusthensaid to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,
15
and I amglad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him."
16
16ThereforeThomas, who is called17Didymus, said to his fellowdisciples, "Let us alsogo, so that we may die with Him."
17
So when Jesuscame, He found that he had alreadybeen in the tomb18fourdays.
18
Now19Bethany was nearJerusalem, abouttwomilesoff;
19
and many of 20the Jews had come to 21Martha and Mary, 22to console them concerning their brother.
20
23Marthatherefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but 24Marystayed at the house.
21
Marthathensaid to Jesus, "25Lord, 26if You had beenhere, my brother would not have died.
22
"Evennow I know that 27whatever* You ask of God, God will give You."
23
Jesussaid to her, "Your brother will riseagain."
24
Marthasaid to Him, "28I know that he will riseagain in the resurrection on the lastday."
25
Jesussaid to her, "29I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will liveevenif he dies,
26
and everyone who lives and believes in Me 30will never*die. Do you believethis?"
27
She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are 31the Christ, the Son of God, even 32He who comes into the world."
28
When she had saidthis, she 33wentaway and calledMary her sister, sayingsecretly, "34The Teacher is here and is calling for you."
29
And when she heard it, she got up quickly and was coming to Him.
30
NowJesus had not yetcome into the village, but 35was still in the placewhereMarthamet Him.
31
36Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and 37consoling her, when they saw that Marygot up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weepthere.
32
Therefore, whenMarycamewhereJesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, "38Lord, 39if You had beenhere, my brother would not have died."
33
WhenJesusthereforesaw her weeping, and 40the Jews who came with her also weeping, He 41was deeplymoved in spirit and 42was troubled,
34
and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see."
36
So44the Jews were saying, "Seehow He 45loved him!"
37
But some of them said, "Could not thisman, who 46opened the eyes of the blindman, havekeptthismanalso from dying?"
38
SoJesus, again being deeplymovedwithin*, came to the tomb. Now it was a 47cave, and a stone was lyingagainst it.
39
Jesussaid, "Remove the stone."Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, "Lord, by thistime there will be a stench, for he has been dead 48fourdays."
40
Jesussaid to her, "49Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"
41
So they removed the 50stone. ThenJesus51raised His eyes, and said, "52Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
42
"I knew that You alwayshear Me; but 53because of the peoplestandingaround I said it, so that they may believe that 54You sent Me."
43
When He had saidthesethings, He cried out with a loudvoice, "Lazarus, comeforth."
44
The man who had diedcameforth, 55boundhand and foot with wrappings, and 56his face was wrappedaround with a cloth. Jesussaid to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
45
57Thereforemany of the Jews58who came to Mary, and 59sawwhat He had done, believed in Him.
46
But some of them went to the 60Pharisees and told them the things whichJesus had done.
