47Therefore1the chiefpriests and the Pharisees2convened a 3council, and were saying, "What are we doing? For thisman is performingmany4signs.
48
"If we let Him go on likethis, allmen will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and takeawayboth our 5place and our nation."
49
But one of them, 6Caiaphas, 7who was highpriest that year, said to them, "You knownothing at all,
50
nor do you take into account that 8it is expedient for you that onemandie for the people, and that the wholenation not perish."
51
Now he did not saythis on his owninitiative, but 9beinghighpriest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
52
and not for the nationonly, but in order that He might also10gathertogether into one the children of God who are scatteredabroad.
53
So from that day on they 11plannedtogether to kill Him.
54
ThereforeJesus12nolonger continued to walkpubliclyamong the Jews, but wentaway from there to the countrynear the wilderness, into a citycalled13Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
55
Now14the Passover of the Jews was near, and manywent up to Jerusalem out of the countrybefore the Passover15to purifythemselves.
56
So they 16were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to oneanother as they stood in the temple, "What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all*?"
57
Now17the chiefpriests and the Pharisees had givenorders that ifanyoneknewwhere He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.
