1Nowbefore the Feast of 1the Passover, Jesusknowing that 2His hour had come that He would depart out of thisworld3to the Father, having loved His ownwho were in the world, He loved them to the end.
2
Duringsupper, 4the devil having alreadyput into the heart of 5JudasIscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,
3
Jesus, 6knowing that the Father had givenallthings into His hands, and that 7He had comeforth from God and was goingback to God,
4
got up from supper, and laidaside His garments; and taking a towel, He 8girdedHimself.
Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet
5Then He pouredwater into the basin, and began to 9wash the disciples'feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
6
So He came to SimonPeter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"
7
Jesusanswered and said to him, "What I do you do not realizenow, but you will understand10hereafter*."
8
Petersaid to Him, "Never* shall You wash my feet!" Jesusanswered him, "11If I do not wash you, 12you havenopart with Me."
9
SimonPetersaid to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."
10
Jesussaid to him, "He who has bathedneedsonly** to wash his feet, but is completelyclean; and 13you are clean, but not all of you."
11
For 14He knew the one who was betraying Him; for thisreason He said, "Not all of you are clean."
12
Sowhen He had washed their feet, and 15taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you knowwhat I have done to you?
13
"You call Me 16Teacher and 17Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
14
"If I then, 18the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you alsoought to washoneanother'sfeet.
15
"For I gave you 19an example that you also should do as I did to you.
16
"Truly, truly, I say to you, 20a slave is not greater than his master, nor is 21one who is sentgreater than the one who sent him.
17
"If you knowthesethings, you are 22blessedif you do them.
18
"23I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have 24chosen; but it is 25that the Scripture may be fulfilled, '26HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEELAGAINST ME.'
19
"From now on 27I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that 28I am He.
20
"Truly, truly, I say to you, 29he who receiveswhomever* I sendreceives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
21 When Jesus had saidthis, He 30became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that 31one of you will betray Me."
22
The disciples began looking at oneanother, 32at a loss to know of whichone He was speaking.
23
There was reclining on 33Jesus'bosomone of His disciples, 34whomJesusloved.
24
SoSimonPetergestured to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking."
25
He, 35leaningbackthus on Jesus'bosom, said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"
26
Jesusthenanswered, "That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him."So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, 36the son of SimonIscariot.
27
After the morsel, 37Satanthen38entered into him. ThereforeJesussaid to him, "What you do, doquickly."
28
Nownoone of thosereclining at the table knew for what purpose He had saidthis to him.
29
For some were supposing, becauseJudas39had the moneybox, that Jesus was saying to him, "Buy the things we haveneed of 40for the feast "; orelse, that he should 41givesomething to the poor.
30
So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and 42it was night.
31
Thereforewhen he had gone out, Jesussaid, "Now is 43the Son of Man44glorified, and 45God is glorified in Him;
32
ifGod is glorified in Him, 46God will alsoglorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.
33
"47Littlechildren, I am with you 48a littlewhilelonger. 49You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I alsosay to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot*come.'
34
"A 50newcommandment I give to you, 51that you loveoneanother, 52even as I have loved you, that you alsoloveoneanother.
35
"53By thisallmen will know that you are My disciples, if you havelove for oneanother."
