2
Early in the morning He cameagain into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and 2He satdown and began to teach them.
3
The scribes and the Phariseesbrought a womancaught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court,
4
they said to Him, "Teacher, thiswoman has been caught in adultery, in the veryact.
5
"Now in the Law3Mosescommanded us to stonesuchwomen; whatthen do You say?"
6
They were sayingthis, 4testing Him, 5so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesusstoopeddown and with His fingerwrote on the ground.
7
But when they persisted in asking Him, 6He straightened up, and said to them, "7He who is withoutsin among you, let him be the 8first to throw a stone at her."
9
When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the olderones, and He was leftalone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court.
10
9Straightening up, Jesussaid to her, "Woman, where are they? Did noonecondemn you?"
11
She said, "Noone, Lord." And Jesussaid, "10I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on 11sinnomore."]
Jesus Is the Light of the World
12ThenJesusagainspoke to them, saying, "12I am the Light of the world; 13he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."
13
So the Phariseessaid to Him, "14You are testifyingaboutYourself; Your testimony is not true."
14
Jesusanswered and said to them, "15Evenif I testifyaboutMyself, My testimony is true, for I know16where I came from and where I am going; but 17you do not knowwhere I come from orwhere I am going.
15
"18You judgeaccording to the flesh; 19I am not judginganyone.
16
"But even20if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.
17
"Even in 21your law it has been written that the testimony of 22twomen is true.
18
"I am He who testifiesaboutMyself, and 23the Father who sent Me testifiesabout Me."
19
So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesusanswered, "You knowneither Me nor My Father; 24if you knew Me, you would know My Fatheralso."
20
Thesewords He spoke in 25the treasury, as 26He taught in the temple; and nooneseized Him, because27His hour had not yetcome.
21
Then He saidagain to them, "I goaway, and 28you will seek Me, and 29will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot*come."
22
So30the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not killHimself, will He, since He says, '31Where I am going, you cannot*come '?"
23
And He was saying to them, "32You are from below, I am from above; 33you are of thisworld, 34I am not of thisworld.
24
"Therefore I said to you that you 35will die in your sins; for unless* you believe that 36I am He, 37you will die in your sins."
25
So they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesussaid to them, "What* have I been saying to you from the beginning?
26
"I havemanythings to speak and to judgeconcerning you, but 38He who sent Me is true; and 39the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."
27
They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.
28
SoJesussaid, "When you 40lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that 41I am He, and 42I donothing on My owninitiative, but I speakthesethings as the Fathertaught Me.
29
"And He who sent Me is with Me; 43He has not left Me alone, for 44I alwaysdo the things that are pleasing to Him."
30
As He spokethesethings, 45many came to believe in Him.
