58
But 1Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 2courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the 3officers to see the outcome.
59
Now the chiefpriests and the whole4Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.
60
They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 5twocameforward,
61
and said, "Thismanstated, '6I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "
62
The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"
63
But 7Jesuskeptsilent. 8And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I 9adjure You by 10the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, 11the Son of God."
64
Jesussaid to him, "12You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter* you will see13THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 14COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
65
Then the highpriest15tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have nowheard the blasphemy;
66
what do you think?" They answered, "16He deservesdeath!"
67
17Then they 18spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and othersslapped Him,
68
and said, "19Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?"
Peter's Denials
6920NowPeter was sittingoutside in the 21courtyard, and a servant-girlcame to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."
70
But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not knowwhat you are talking about."
71
When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to thosewho were there, "Thisman was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72
And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."
73
A littlelater the bystanderscame up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; 22for even the way you talkgives you away*."
74
Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a roostercrowed.
75
And Peterremembered the word which Jesus had said, "23Before a roostercrows, you will deny Me threetimes." And he went out and weptbitterly.
