Woe to you1 who are complacent2 in Zion, and to you who feel secure3 on Mount Samaria,4 you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!5
Go to Calneh6 and look at it; go from there to great Hamath,7 and then go down to Gath8 in Philistia. Are they better off than9 your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?
You put off the evil day and bring near a reign of terror.10
You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and lounge on your couches.11 You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.12
You strum away on your harps13 like David and improvise on musical instruments.14
You drink wine15 by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve16 over the ruin of Joseph.17
Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;18 your feasting and lounging will end.19
