Some sat in darkness1 and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering2 in iron chains,311
for they had rebelled4 against the words of God and despised5 the counsel6 of the Most High.
So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.713
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them8 from their distress.
He brought them out of darkness9 and the deepest gloom10 and broke away their chains.1115
Let them give thanks12 to the LORD for his unfailing love13 and his wonderful deeds14 for men,
for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.
Some became fools15 through their rebellious ways16 and suffered affliction17 because of their iniquities.
They loathed all food18 and drew near the gates of death.1919
Then they cried20 to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them21 from their distress.
He sent forth his word22 and healed them;23 he rescued24 them from the grave.25
